Hi everyone !
We're back in Paris for a new video
about League's French Dubbing.
A few months ago
we talked about two specific things:
the recording session for Ekko, a brand new champ
and Gangplank's rework
with the Bilgewater event.
Today we'll discuss two other topics:
the processing techniques we use to modify a voice
and something you were all passionate about
Janna's new French voice.
In the comments section of the first video
many of you were wondering
about those "weird" voices
that are sometimes robotic, melodic or hollow.
This is what we call "processing".
and we asked Greg to tell us more about it.
After we record everything in the studio
we use an editing tool
because we can't work directly on the recordings.
We need to correct small problems first,
make sure we recorded everything
and that we have the right files.
Then we need to edit everything
to obtain a clean result
before applying all the special effects
that will turn a character
into a real dragon, or a true demon
or even a robot like we did today with Sion.
The cleaning process is fairly simple
this is the whole audio wave
with all the files we recorded.
In this case, it's Aurelion Sol.
And you can see there are differences between files:
some are very loud, some are a lot softer.
So we're gonna level everything out,
to make sure the whole character
is consistent from A to Z.
We don't want super loud files while others are too soft.
Then we'll need to get rid
of all the sound distortions.
We do all of that ourselves,
file after file, only by listening
Syllable after syllable
we clean everything
and we make sure it follows the same order as the script
and that it's all ready for post-processing.
Once it's all clean
and we're sure the files are in the right order
without any background noise,
we proceed with adding different sound effects
using the filters that Riot sent us
and the proper configuration.
We have the English files for reference
and we'll make sure the French voice
sounds as close as possible
to the English voice.
For example
this file here has been cleaned:
And once you've added all the effects
the English voice sounds like this:
We take care of adjusting
all these plug-ins and softwares
to make the voice stronger, give it some echo
we remove or add some frequencies
or put some extra sound effects
to obtain a result that sounds like this:
Which is fairly close to the English voice.
And once we have the right setting
we use if for the entire character
we cut everything according to Riot's instructions
the files are implemented in game
and we're done.
This is essential to give champions and their skins
their rightful place in a particular universe.
We can add effects without changing the voice:
Alter an existing voice for a skin,
which we did for Gravelord Azir:
Or in the case of a legendary skin like Mecha Zero Sion:
create a new script,
record new audio files,
and make him a new member of the growing Mecha family.
To me, processing techniques are really amazing.
Hearing your own voice
transformed completely like that.
My voice is already deep
and I always make it deep but...
Can you imagine having that kind of voice for real?
I think what we can do with this technology is really impressive.
What I like about him
is that he's kind of a bad guy
but there are also some humorous sides to him.
He can also lighten up the mood.
Even if he's basically a big brute!
I like how these funny aspects are in contrast with his core character.
Since he can transform into a train,
when he says "right in the caboose!"
it's really funny!
Spot on!
This was a good one!
As an actor
I love becoming someone else.
I love characters with a strong personality.
And I love voice acting for video games.
It's amazing to do stuff like this!
In a way, I think I'm hiding behind these characters.
They're like a shelter,
and it's easier than being myself.
It might sound stupid but that's how I really feel.
You can really express yourself
give life to a character.
You can also work on your voice
almost like a singer doing exercises.
Sometimes I do that in the morning,
after a party the day before,
or when I've smoked a lot…
I do voice exercises and breathing exercises
then I go "OOOOOOO"
I practice, I brighten my voice,
I work on it and warm it up.
If your vocal cords are tired,
you can clear your throat a bit.
After all,
the voice is a very important tool for actors.
A few weeks ago, we gave you the opportunity to vote
and choose a champion who deserved a new French voice.
We were really amazed by the number of people who participated!
We carefully monitored the results of that survey,
and the passionate comments in the boards,
and we are very happy today
to attend Janna's new recording!
Thank you all for participating in that project,
and here is a glimpse of the new French voice of the Storm's Fury!
As with many actors,
it all started with classic drama for me.
I read my first play in high school, and I thought to myself:
Wow, this is what I wanna do
acting is my true calling.
Then I was able to work on dubbing for TV shows, cartoons,
then on video games,
and I realized these were all different,
that each one requires different techniques,
and that you don't act the same at all.
It's a real pleasure to work
on all these different contents
when you're a professional actor.
To me...
it's really important to visualize what you do.
I always draw inspiration from what I see,
either pictures, or sometimes images.
I take in as much as I can,
I assemble everything in my head,
and I create my own movie about the characters,
depending on their looks,
or what they sound like in English,
and I try to put it all together myself…
… so I can act the proper way for a video game dubbing.
I can identify myself to Janna.
Obviously, we have the same blonde hair!
She has a fresh and lively character that I really like.
I like the duality
between her light and ethereal side,
and her stronger,
funnier side with that Forecast costume of hers.
When it comes to duality,
I can totally relate!
Having two sides to the same character.
These professional actors put in a lot of effort
to make sure your favorite champions have their own, true identity.
While we're here, to thank you all
for being so passionate about League,
here's a small bonus that should revive
some nice April fool's memories…
Draven is a selfish, self-centered character,
completely obnoxious,
and that you love to hate.
As an actor, it's really funny to play that kind of character.
I really hope we have nothing in common!
But...
playing a plain and simple character is not really interesting.
The best thing is often
to play the complete opposite of yourself.
This is probably why
we chose to be actors.
Playing a ***, or an arrogant guy,
giving life to all these flaws,
it's way more fun
than playing perfect, flawless characters.
And flaws are what we can play with,
it's our job to play with them.
This is what acting is all about.
The pleasant part about video games,
is that we often get to give our voice to overblown,
stereotyped characters.
Take Draven, for example:
It's completely exhilarating.
It allows us to…
…invent a completely new style that we don't have in real life.
And there's nothing funnier than to do that kind of recording.
Generally speaking,
video games often give us more freedom than regular dubbing…
It's similar to cartoon dubbing,
everything is bigger, more expressive,
and it's a real pleasure for us.
You arrive in the studio and they tell you "Today, you'll be Draven"
He is an awesome character.
I had to become like him, and it was a lot of fun.
He's completely overblown,
and you can't behave like that in your everyday life.
At least, I hope I'm not like Draven in my everyday life,
otherwise my neighbors, my friends and even my colleagues…
…they would really hate me!
To conclude about video games,
I'd say I'm among the people
who love video game dubbing,
because it's creative and I can have fun
and if you like what you do,
the players will be pleased too,
when they hear the result.
This concludes our video!
We hope you had a great time with us.
Feel free to leave comments under the video.
I hope to see you soon on the Rift
in French, of course
and thanks again for making all of this possible. Bye!
But Draven is super interesting!
Draven is the strongest, handsomest, greatest man ever!
So I invite you all, dear players…
…to come with me to Draaaaaveeen's party!
