Well, cyber security to me is the next phase of computer networking. When I started in this field in the 1980's the internet
was invented. I was born before the internet and my first job was working with dial up modems. We were really interested in
connecting people into a global network so they could communicate. So mission accomplished right? Everybody's
doing that and using the network and loving it, but some threats have developed. Now people's identities are being stolen, money
is being stolen, there's bullying, there's even wars being waged now over the internet. There's cyber terrorism and all kinds of
threats out there and this is a growing problem. So I see it as the next kind of phase is people like my students to help solve
some of these problems that’ll lock down parts of the network to make them safer for people to use. We’re focused on
preparing students so that they can get jobs related to cyber security. These jobs might be entirely in the cyber security
realm, like a security expert at a company that would help the company assess its risk and fix those problems. Or more likely
they’re just extra responsibilities on what they already do in our program – building networks, maintaining networks, but now they
have to secure the network. In the hopes that we can bring a program to Clark College I’ve been looking at what it is. I know a
little bit about what it is as I’ve done it professionally, but what it is in terms of employability. Who’s hiring, what are they hiring for,
that kind of thing, what kind of skills do they need. Now I’ve got an inventory of what that is, and what it would take to get our
students prepared for those jobs.
