In the nineteen thirties, wolves were driven out of most of the Northern
Rockies through hunting, trapping, and poisoning.
Without wolves, elk herds became too big in Yellowstone National Park, and
caused damage to the park and surrounding areas.
In 1995, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reintroduced wolves
to Yellowstone to restore balance.
Elk herds and park wildlands are
healthier now that wolves are back.
But now, the federal government and some states led by Wyoming and Idaho are
planning to reverse course and kill most of the wolves.
This move is being driven by anti wildlife forces working against wolves and the
Endangered Species Act.
Earthjustice is working to protect the wolves and stop them from being killed.
