According to the Colombian government
there are 118,693 visually impaired children
who have to go through this awful experience every day
In Pereira there are 1,001 people old enough to go to school
people who are entitled to good quality education
But this doesn't only happen in the third world,
according to the World Health Organization
there are 118 million visually impaired people in the world,
up to now they've been denied the possibility to enjoy a world full of color
But things can change
IRIS Project, And the blind will see ...
IRIS is a system that offers equal conditions to visually impaired children
In a traditional classroom
by offering them the possibility to access
more complete and varied graphical pedagogical contents
which they couldn't access without the IRIS system
This is possible by means of a unique system
that allows a person with visual limitations to perceive
all kinds of images, forms, figures and colors through tact
by means of a computer,
a special pedagogical software and an high-tech devices
Advantages
Teachers with visually impaired students in their classes
must create educational material that makes possible
for these kids to identify different shapes
IRIS provides teachers with a
broad set of high quality educational tools
with a broad set of high quality educational tools
that will allow them to create, for all of their students,
a good learning environment with the same learning opportunities for everyone
a good learning environment with the same learning opportunities for everyone
IRIS is the only commercial system in the world
that allows a visually impaired person
to perceive colors and shapes through vibrations
that can be felt with the sense of touch
It is a Colombian invention
that has an international PCT patent with the OMPI,
with a priority of entrance in 127 countries of the world.
Why invest on IRIS?
We're not talking about investing in a new fancy mp3 player
that will make school more fun for kids
we are not speaking of a luxury,
we're talking about the universal right
that every child has to get an appropriate education,
a right government must make sure is not ignored
IRIS is the means to guarantee this right
allowing visually impaired children
to see and understand hundreds of images
distributed in a data base classified by knowledge areas
such as math, geometry, geography
and chemistry, to mention only a few
How does it work?
Children put their hands on a frame
in which the different colors and shapes generated by the system can be "seen"
Variations in the speed
of the vibrations allow them to tell
one kind of vibration
from the others
that's how they can identify patterns
Very similar to the Braille system,
in which each letter is assigned a set of points to represent it,
IRIS assigns a different kind of vibration to a color
by means of a specially designed codification
So if a child can tell the difference in the speed of the
different vibrations he can tell one particular color from the others
The vibrating frame on the device is divided by a grid in eight lines,
each line containing eight stamps
Each stamp vibrates independently
allowing the child to distinguish different tactile shapes
by following a path with a uniform vibration
