This Week in Army History.
Lieutenant Charles Wellington Reed heads home.
In June of 1865, many of the volunteers who fought for the preservation of the Union were returning from war.
Among them was Reed, a distinguished Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and topographical engineer.
But Army history will remember Reed for his artistic gifts.
After the war, Reed began painting as a means of recounting his days in the Civil War.
Many of his sketchbooks, drawings, and paintings
were later donated to the Library of Congress two years after his death in 1926.
Through Reed's letters, sketches, and paintings,
future generations are granted an extraordinary glimpse into the daily life of this individual soldier.
