I couldn't decide what to do in the future until I saw Ms.Yamaguchi last month.
She is a nurse at the hospital and was the instructor during my work experience.
On the first day, she explained how to change bedsheets for patients. It was difficult for
me to make the beds quickly. When I was doing that with Ms.Yamaguchi, she talked to the
patients in the room about the weather, the news and so on.
She said to me, "Natsumi, I always try to communicate with the patients. I believe that
communicating with them is one of the most important ways to learn about their conditions."
On the second day, I helped an old man who had difficulty eating food. First, Ms. Yamaguchi
showed me how to do it, and then I tried it. I couldn't help him very well, but he thanked
me a lot. After that, I said to Ms. Yamaguchi, "I was very
happy to know he was glad. I think I understand a little about nursing."
On the third day, I had a chance to help a foreign patient with Ms. Yamaguchi.
I was surprised to know she could speak English very well. She learned how he was feeling
by doing so, but I couldn't understand what they were talking about.
During lunch time on that day, I talked with Ms.Yamaguchi. When I asked how she learned
English, she told me about her career. She started working at hospital after finishing
nursing school. When she worked there, she sometimes had foreign patients but she didn't
understand what they said. To communicate with foreign patients and help them better,
she thought she needed to make her English better. She said, "So
I decided to stop my work and went to America. During my three year stay in the US, I studied
English harder than before. After coming back to Japan, I could help foreign patients through
English and understand what they wanted or how they were feeling."
Her words gave me a chance to think about my future.
Three days after I finished my work experience, I wrote a short letter in English to Ms. Yamaguchi
to thank her.
Last week I got a letter from her. She said in it, "Thank you for your letter. I
was very surprised to see it. It's written in English! I'm glad to learn about your dream
to be nurse and its reason. I think it's wonderful to work for sick people in foreign countries.
Also, I'm happy to hear about your request. You can come
here to see me when you want to learn more about this job. But please remember it's important
for you to study English and other subjects at school first. I think that's the shortest
way to get your dream." Her message was very clear to me.
This work experience has opened the door to my future. I've found what
kind of nurse I want to be in the future.
