Today's build is a very special build,
as it represents the first urban Aboriginal build,
here in Ottawa.
We know that there's a lot of urban Aboriginal families
that have come to the city, and they just don't have
appropriate housing.
And many of them want to be homeowners.
The purpose for both CMHC and for Habitat for Humanity is to
help people get into houses and help Canadians with access to
affordable housing, and in the case of Habitat for Humanity,
to help low-income families get into houses, as well.
One of the things that we are really excited about
this year is our new urban Aboriginal program,
and CMHC has been a founding partner in this program.
This particular house, it's quite exciting;
we have a grandmother, Ida, and her three grandchildren
who are moving into this house...
and we are helping them move out of less desirable housing
into their very own first home that they will own.
CMHC was a founding sponsor of the Habitat for Humanity
Aboriginal program, and that's why, today,
we are very proud to contribute to this project,
and at the same time, we know that Aboriginal housing
is a day-to-day challenge for all Aboriginal people in the
country, and we are very proud to contribute to this project,
not only in a very concrete manner by building this house
today but also with the more than 60 houses that have been
built across Canada in recent years.
It makes me so grateful that there are people out
there willing to donate their time to...
somebody like me.
I'm really grateful.
