Lots of people have questions about joining the
Navy. Today, we'll be talking about some of the
requirements for female Sailors. One of the main
concerns for women is their hair and how much they
have to cut off. Don't worry: You don't have to
get a buzz cut to join the Navy. But your hair
should be neat, clean and well-groomed. If you're
going to Boot Camp, your hair should be shoulder
length or above. Ponytails, pigtails, hanging
strands, hair beads and braids that stick out from
your scalp are not allowed. You can, however, have
neat buns, multiple braids or cornrows. Bobby pins
and hair ties are allowed, if they are similar to
your hair color. You can dye your hair, but it must
look natural. Another area of importance is makeup.
Your makeup must blend with your natural skin tone.
Exaggerated styles are not authorized in uniform.
Nails shouldn't exceed one-quarter inch measured
from the fingertip, and must be clean. You can
also wear nail polish. Other body art and tattoos
are allowed, as long as they are not on your head,
face, neck or scalp. Also, they must not contradict
Navy values. Female weight requirements are also a
topic of interest while considering the Navy.
These requirements are evaluated throughout
your Navy career. Women are required to have a 33%
body fat content or less. Those who exceed this
number may enter the delayed entry program as long
as their body fat content is not over 36%. We hope
