this will be a crochet treat.
i am using a foam cone shape.
this is the brand i am using.
it's from "Desert Foam Design It : Silks and Naturals"
any type of cone will work.
you can use a longer cone or a shorter cone.
the cone i have is 9 inches long/23 centimeters .
i am also using floral pins. this is what they look like.
a size H crochet hook and 2 different colors of yarn.
i have a strip of shells along a chain with a picot stitch on each double crochet.
we are going to start by adding the slip knot to the crochet hook.
you take the tail end, wrap it over the yarn.
now you have a loop. wrap the loop over your main strand.
put your hook below the center strand, back up,
and this creates the slip knot.
now we want to make a chain of 225.
depending on the size of your cone, the chain may need to be longer
so this will be a project that is pretty easy to modify.
continue chaining until you have completed 225 chains.
i have completed my length of chain.
this is the other green i have chosen to use.
this is what it looks like complete.
in the first chain work 1 single crochet
skip 2 chains, in the next chain work 1 double crochet.
now work a chain 3 and this will be a "picot" stitch.
slip stitch in the top of the double crochet
and we will do this 5 times in the same chain.
work another double crochet
chain 3
slip stitch in the top of the double crochet
double crochet in the same chain
chain 3
slip stitch in the top of the double crochet
double crochet in the same chain
chain 3
slip stitch in the top of the double crochet
double crochet in the same chain
chain 3

and that completes the first shell.
skip 2 chains
work a shell in the third chain
and it will be done the same way with a double crochet

skip 2 chains
work a single crochet in the next chain
we have completed 3 shells
you will continue across for the length of the chain
this is one of those forgiving projects where if you don't get it exactly perfect
for instance, if you skip 1 chain instead of 2
or you skip 3 instead of 2, it's not going to be that big of a deal.
so, depending how full you want to make your shells,
you may want to modify it to skip 1 or skip 3.
it's really up to you.
this is what i have ended up with.
i have 2 long lengths of shell
you will want to sew in all your tails
and just weave them between the stitches
when you're finished, then cut off the tail
you will want to do that on both pieces
now i have my cone and floral pins
you'll want to decide which side is your front side
take the first color, align it to the bottom of the cone
and attach you floral pin just like that
and we'll be covering this up, so you won't see it
take the second color and align it to the top and off set it
just like that
every so often you will want to add in another floral pin
now i'm back around here to the beginning
i want to make sure my floral pins are hidden underneath each scallop of the shell
continue pinning and wrapping the strips evenly until you have covered the cone
if some of the pins are showing,
you are able to adjust them once all the strips are in place
now this turns out that my lighter green is little bit longer than the darker green
i went ahead and crocheted another chain of 50 to fill in at the top
this is what you will need to do when you have a cone that is a different size
you can make your tree however you want to
with whatever colors you want to use
and i'm going to end with a pin right here at the top to hold that down
and then now i can do some adjusting if i find that i have some pins showing
i can arrange it so that they don't show
but i think that looks pretty good how it is
i found that it worked best to attach the lights to the cone
and then attach the crochet strips once the lights have been attached
