I'm on location today
proud to be speaking to you from the brand new Martin House Seniors Residence
in Milton -
one of Halton's newest affordable housing buildings
for seniors.
Ensuring individuals and families that access to safe,
affordable housing in Halton is a priority for Regional Council.
Council recognizes the importance of affordable housing
and the vital role it plays in building a healthy and sustainable community.
While the Province overseas the area of affordable housing in Canada,
Halton Region is committed to creating more affordable housing options in the
Region so residents can choose to live or remain in Halton throughout their lives.
To this end,
Council has recently undertaken a number of initiatives
that have increased the amount of affordable housing in Halton -
a key action in the Citizens' Priority Action Plan.
In 2010,
Halton Regional Council worked very hard to secure funding from the federal
and provincial governments -
funding that would increase the amount of affordable housing available in
Halton.
Council was successful in its efforts and quickly got to work,
putting the money received towards two very important projects -
the development of Martin House Seniors Residence
and the building of a second affordable seniors residence located in Burlington -
Aldershot Village Residence.
Martin House Seniors Residence,
located at 189 Ontario Street South in Milton,
provides Halton with 80 new units for seniors,
including eight units for persons with disabilities.
Steps from the Milton Seniors' Activity Center
and the Milton Mall,
this new building gives seniors access to safe,
affordable,
quality housing in their community.
As I speak,
seniors are moving into this spectacular new facility.
Over in Burlington, at 540 Plains Road East,
the final touches are being put in place for the opening of the Aldershot Village
Residence in early December.
In addition to creating 65 new affordable housing units in Halton,
the Aldershot Village Residence
will provide support to people with physical disabilities
through our partner
Supported@Home.
The building will also be home for the Burlington Public Library's new
Aldershot Branch,
located on the first floor of the building.
I'm so pleased to be able to show you the progress Regional Council has made in
increasing the amount of affordable housing in Halton.
Council will continue to make affordable housing in Halton a priority.
I'd like to thank the provincial and federal governments for their investment
in Halton.
By working together we are helping to make Halton a better place to live,
work, raise a family and retire.
