Let's learn how to frame our sliding hip shimmy. My name's Karen and this is Johanna, and we're
with Hip Expressions Belly Dance Studio, in Saint Petersburg, Florida. First of all, the
hip slide is a horizontal move. Let's have our feet slightly apart, and our knees are
going to just be soft. Make sure this belly button's pulled in, and we're going to shift
our weight from side to side, side to side. Now remember, in belly dance, when you're
layering it's not so much what you're moving, it's what you're not moving that makes the
movement very visible. So as you can see, the hips are moving and the chest is staying
still. So, now we're going, let's get our shimmy going, and we're going to do that same
motion there, and then we're going to add our hands to it. So we're going to slide side
and side, side and side. Now our wrists are going to frame our hips. We're not going to
put it in front, but we're going to frame on either side to give us that space, so that
we can see what our hips are doing, and it gives the audience an idea of where to look
with their eyes. And we're just pushing out with the wrists from side to side to match
those hips. Practice this in the mirror, and you'll have a nice framed shimmy hip slide
too.
