The mark of a good driver has traditionally been how well they can parallel park. It requires
the perfect combination of positioning, angles, use of the brake and throttle. We hit the
streets to ask our members how they rate their reverse parking. Sometimes good, depends on
how I actually back it up - its the luck of the draw.
I'd like to say really, really good. My husband probably says things like consistent.
Fairly good, been doing it for 50 years or 48 years.
But struggling to master the art of the perfect park, reverse or otherwise may be a thing
of the past - thanks to the new car technology - park assist.
It's a system that's able to autonomously park the car for a person. But would handing
over control to a machine be too much to handle? Let's find out.
There are variations depending on how the manufacturers designed the system, but essentially
what they're doing is they're using sensors to actually determine that the parking space
is big enough for the system to be able to park the car into it.
This is unbelievable. So, whats the verdict?
Giving control to the vehicle is something I'm not used to.
It did it absolutely beautifully and there's all these little bells and whistles and beeps
going off and I think it would take time to get used to it.
Weirdest sensation feeling - you think its not possible yet there it is right in front
of your eyes - great. And do they consider it a valuable feature?
I can understand like in the city driving around the city having to reverse park into
spots you don't think you can get into but it reckons you can.
No matter who's sitting in the drivers seat you know you're still can get that really
good parallel park. You gotta be a bit skeptical but I tell you
what its changed my mind - its fantastic.
