In world news, mobile phones are helping to improve life in the Pacific Islands. Digicel
Pacific, an Irish company, has assisted in providing cellular telephones to Vanuatu,
Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Fiji, and Nauru. The venture, which began in 2006, has
been supported by US$120 million in loans from the International Finance Corporation
of the World Bank Group. Benefits from the project include farmers being able to call
ahead to check prices in the local markets, villagers doing banking on the phone, and
text alert warnings for emergency conditions.
Our sincere thankfulness, Digicel Pacific, for this laudable endeavor. May enhanced communication
bring greater well-being to the kind-hearted people of all the Pacific Islands.
