Alright, we are going to start with a basic conversion here, my exponents dropped this
is supposed to be 750,000 inches cubed and we want to convert it to yards cubed. We want
to set up what I call t-charts. The easiest way to convert is to convert our inches to
feet and then our feet to yards but what we have to remember is that there are 12 inches
in 1 foot and what we want are cubic feet so I need to cube both sides of this 1 cubed
is still just 1 so there is 1 cubic foot in 1,728 cubic inches. So 1,728 cubic inches
in 1 cubic foot and then notice my cubic inches will cancel out and then I need to do the
same thing for yards. I know there are 3 feet in every one yard and so I want cubic feet
and cubic yards so 3 cubed is 27. There are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard. So, 27 feet
cubed in 1 yard cubed and then notice that my feet will cancel out. Multiply straight
across the top and straight across the bottom. So, I still have my 750,000 yards cubed and
along the bottom, that's 46,656 and when we divide the two we should get 16.08 cubic yards
and that is just a basic conversion. So, the next one there is a little bit more in it.
If your car gets 25 miles per gallon, then how much will it cost you to go 375 miles
if gas costs $3.50 per gallon. So, if I write out everything I have here 24 miles for every
one gallon
and then $3.50 per gall and we want to know how much will it cost to go 375 miles. So
we would like our dollars as our final answer. So, we are going to save that for last. We
will start with our 375 miles and work on getting rid of our miles. So I know if I just
flip this fraction over, I know that 1 gallon will last me 24 miles. That gets rid of my
miles. Now I know that it will cost me $3.50 for every gallon I put in my car and so now
multiply across the top and multiply across the bottom to see what we end up with. So
we have 375 on the top times $3.50 so that is $1312.5 over 24 and then just divide. So
it looks like it will cost about $54.69.
