Hi, I'm Laura from mwritersworkshops.com. I am going to talk about how to learn to write.
Learning to write involves some fine motor skills and for different kids, they develop
these skills at different ages. So, when a child is really ready, you can support them
in various ways. But, really look for some signs that their motor skills are ready to
really focus on writing. One, the first step is learning how to hold a pencil. And that
is usually pointing the tip of the pencil pointing towards the writing hand's shoulder,
now at the same time they're balancing the pencil on their ring finger. Now, the posture
when they are writing should be very relaxed. Trying to encourage kids not to tense up.
A lot of times, just the hard work of getting into the proper position can cause kids to
become really tense. So, relax. Let students get comfortable with this. They can begin
writing on lined paper and usually, following a dotted line can help them form the letters
in the proper way and then they can go from there. They can begin to form letters on their
own once they have had the chance to practice, following a guide. Encourage writing to take
place in a lot of different context; not just in handwriting lessons. The more they use
fine motor skills, the stronger they will be. They can do tracing of letters, tracing
of other objects. Lots of different ways that they can build their muscles, their fine motor
skills and their muscles, so that they will be able to be good writers. So, those are
some ideas about learning how to write.
