The 2010 champion is André Lange.
André Lange is the winner. The reigning 2-man bob Olympic champion is the
Champion of the Year 2010.
I'm really at a loss for words. Just now when the announcement was made – I've
never been so excited in my whole life. Because it was the first time that I
couldn't really influence the decision. I'm also incredibly proud to be part of this
amazing team. I'm really proud to have been chosen from among these 3,800
athletes. It's absolutely amazing.
smart has been a partner right from the start which means that this is now the
eleventh year for smart. The two are a good team. Because they're
both exceptional - the car and the event.
smart and the Champion of the Year – that's a perfect combination for us. We've
been involved in sport for many years. And smart stands for an active lifestyle
and driving fun in line with our slogan "open your mind".
68 top German athletes entered and travelled to Portugal for a week. Five of
them were nominated, but in the end there can only be one winner.
I think that that it's something very special. And of course even though I no
longer actively compete, I still enjoy contact with those who are very active.
And that's also what this whole week has been about for me.
Some relaxation from the tough daily training routine – that's the reward for
Olympic, world and European champions. And Germany's sporting elite enjoyed
their time on the Algarve with some very special highlights.
For example, Christian Reif, European long jump champion, challenged his
girlfriend Julia to a 50m duel at the wheel of a smart fortwo BRABUS. The duel
ended in a draw.
Or Patrick Hausding, one of the five nominees for the title "Champion of the
Year". Even aside from his daily training routine he couldn't keep away from his
passion - jumping. But the backdrop was a little different this time. A true
champion!
It's a great honour to be among the five best of my own colleagues, all athletes
themselves. And especially for me as a diver who's not really in the spotlight, it's
really fantastic to get so far.
The Champion of the Year 2010 has been chosen. And next year, too, the most
successful German athletes will come together again when the "Champion of
the Year" is chosen.
