I think i covered the first point
Are Dentist really exposed to a data breach
Absolutely
we're going to talk about how breaches happen the nature of data breach risks
Is avoidance possible in today's cyber environment? The answer is
No
it is not in fact
unfortunately with a cyber breach
you can do everything right and still get hacked
Like this fella in Portland, he got hacked by
One of the
eastern russia rivals
Here's the things with hackers; they are not targeting
your practice or your practice
they are targeting all health care providers in a geographic region and they want to see what sticks.
The folks that we go to when there is a data breach
that helps dentists with compliance is a company called I.D. Experts
They just happen to be in our backyard in Portland. They happened to be experts in
healthcare data breaches
Couple of years ago identified
health care breaches as the
next big thing versus
financial breaches
I'm sure
everybody has gotten a call from their bank or credit card that said are you
in Paris today because you just had a charge on your credit card
Seems like I get three or four of those a year. You answer no, you get a new credit card no issue.
So fraud detection for banks financial services is really really good now.
So the next big thing is let's steal
what they call medical information, PHI
I am on told, on the open market
that if a PHI is really good and includes some financial record; like social security number. It can go for 200 bucks a record. Well let's use my guy in Portland he had 4300 record stolen at 200 bucks a record on the black market that hacker can make alot of money.
and the feds are taking this extraordinarily seriously
if somebody got into your system
and all of your cardio stuff was encrypted but your xrays were not? Just a xray of a mouth is considered PHI. That's considered a breach
So why worry? The risks are growing, healthcare
data breach has improved by 32% last year
and like I said earlier dental practices are proportionally represented
The average cost is sixty dollars
Hard cost now, this isn't
time and
trouble
Hard cost
on the low end about sixty bucks a record
but we've seen them as high in hospitals, for example, over two hundred dollars a record and you'll see a example of a national breach that was a hundred and seven dollars a record so I'd say the minimum, the absolute minimum is sixty dollars.
Breach reporting in mandatory and public
under the high tech act you will have to do a press conference
and notify all your patients of your breach
so your community knows
Once the OCR begins a investigation
you will have the luxury of being on their website
a little forum called the wall of shame
where every body who has a data breach shows up.
And you can go right into the HHS website and you can see it right there and scroll down and see every dentist that has had a breach
including some from Greater Seattle, Tacoma, the northwest
so data breaches are escalating
between February 5th, 2005,
and last may 26
there were 561 million 465 thousand 563 records breached there's only 300 million people that are living
any idea how many breaches between
last may and
within a couple of day ago? Another 10 million 5 million, 2 million?
about 46 million
and is expected decline
and the feds, if you've seen the news lately
the feds say yes, this is a major problem. Unfortunately
we don't know what to do about it
So what is the exposure?
It's technically defined as a breach
of your preduciary duty to protect private information of the patients.
