Hello, I'm COL A. J. Darden, your Garrison Commander here at Fort Detrick.
As the summer comes to an end and we begin to transition into the fall and winter seasons
we have to refocus our attention on the unique hazards this time of year can bring.
Here are a few safety tips:
As the days get shorter will spend more time driving in darkness,
so allow your eyes time to adjust.
Also, as the leaves fall off the trees
be aware that the roads can be slippery in wet conditions, so take precautions.
This is also a good time to change the batteries in your home smoke detectors.
Our children will also be affected by the shortened hours of daylight
As they travel back and forth to school.
I urge everyone to be extra cautious and continuously look out for children
walking to and from schools,
bus stops, and recreational areas.
The coolest season also raises a risk of a serious killer entering your home,
an oderless, colorless gas, called carbon monoxide
which is caused by most home heating sources.
Be sure to have your vents and chimneys inspected before the winter season
and install a carbon monoxide monitor if you don't have one.
Our Army has come a long way by identifying and managing risk both on and off the job
and will continue this effort.
As one team,
leaders, soldiers, families, civilians, working together we can continue this effort.
Everyone on Fort Detrick makes up the one team, one mission, family.
All of you are needed to continue our important work.
Please visit the safety page on the Fort Detrick website for additional safety tips
for you and your family. Thank you.
