South Korea is shutting down operations at two of its nuclear reactors and officials
said Monday that could result in “unprecedented” power shortages.
Officials found the two
reactors were using parts supplied with forged quality certificates.
Here’s the BBC...
“The
problems in the two nuclear power plants were caused by several thousand small components
like fuses and power switches that were found not to have the correct safety certificates.”
The
International Business Times adds,
“The plant operator found that eight suppliers
had sold a total of 7,682 items with forged quality certificates between 2003 and 2012.”
The
Minister of Knowledge Economy says such parts don’t pose a safety threat.
But the
Voice of America reports technicians may spend months replacing thousands of fuses, cooling
fans and other parts before restarting the reactors.
The two reactors account for
about 5% of the country’s power supply.
