Hey Friends and welcome back to Day 10 of 20 Days of English Pronunciation. I'm Kristen
with TIPSY YAK and today is Day 10. Did I say that twice? :) Today I am drinking barrel
aged gin called Koskue from Kyrö Distillery...any of you that speak Finnish, please tell me
how the hell I'm suppose to be saying this word....that would be fantastic. So make sure
to go get yourself something nice to drink as well and we'll get started.....so good.
So today we are going to talk a little bit about how to pronounce different numbers....and
you are like, Kristen, I learned how to say numbers the first day of English.....yeah
yeah yeah....I know, it's a little bit different than probably what you learned. First I just
want to start with numbers themselves....and I want to start with the numbers 20, 30, 40,
50, 60....blah blah blah. Let's start with 20 because it is a little bit special in English.
So we have this number 2 0....and you learned it as the word twen-ty.....twen-ty...because
that's how it's spelled.....t w e n t y....twen-ty.....but that's not how we say it in English, we say
twon-ee....usually like...t w o n e e....twonee....twonee. So we don't pronounce the t definitely and
that first e turns into that uh sound...that I taught you the first day of 30 Days of English...twenty.
That is twenty. Let's move on to 30. It is spelled thirty...but again we don't pronounce
the t the way it looks, we pronounce it like d....if you remember in a previous video I
told you that a lot of times we turn ts into ds....well this is true of all the round numbers
like 30, 40, 50, 60...moving on. This number is not pronounced thir-ty.....it's pronounced
thir-dy. Thir-dy. Same with 40, and 50, and 60 and 70 and 80 and 90....and ok, that's
all :) We pronounce it with d. And one of the main reasons we do this in American English
is to make completely clear that there's a difference between a number like 13 and 30.
So a number like 1 3....we pronounce like thirteen....t....thirteen. Then if you change
it to 3 0....it's thir-dy....thir-dy...30. So anytime you have a number that is a number
plus 0...you know the ending should be pronounced dy. OK, now that we have that let's move on
to how you have to say, like, dates. So you can't just say....20 December....you have
to say 20th of December. So I already told you that you pronounce this word 20....not
twin-ty...so if we have to add the th....this sound is ith...it's always ith. Twon-nee-ith.....20th....same
with 30...you know it's thir-dy...and we have to add ith. Thir-dee-ith....30th. The reason
is, most everyone I talk to...instead of saying 20th or 30th.....they say twon-it.....thir-dith....they
blend these vowels together...and it's really important for us that you don't...it's really
actually 2 vowels. So it's two-nee-ith. So the nee....is the ee sound and the next syllable
is the i..i....that i sound that I have a video about, that we've talked about way in
the past....the sound i....not ee. So it has to be 3 sounds....two-nee-ith.....two-nee-ith...two-nee-ith.
Same with thir-dee-ith....40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th....always: ee-ith....ee-ith....ee-ith.
You have to make it two separate sounds. So that's all I have for you today guys...I hope
this was helpful, I hope to see you back here again tomorrow for Day 11...as we continue
through the 20 Days of English Pronunciation. Have a fantastic day...and cheers! :)
