I tremendously respect the students that UTEP gets. Many of these students are first-generation
college students. So they don’t have the familial support. They don’t have a mother
or father who also went to college telling them this is what you need to do. They have
to get the inspiration from themselves, and that can be very, very difficult especially
when you see all your others friends who may be working and gaining more money and you
are slaving away, in the unglamorous life of being a student.
So, I would tell donors that the students here really need the help. Many of them are
fighting an uphill battle. They come from untraditional environments where it isn’t
necessarily expected that they go to college. Their parents may want them to go to school.
But they are not really giving them the full support to do so.
And I think that’s where Alumni and donors can really make a difference here because
what we’re doing is telling the students we value what you are doing here. We want
you to succeed and we want you to get out of here in four years with a degree that is
going to help you do better for yourself and your family, ultimately.
