Hi, I’m Attorney General Martha Coakley. Our office has seen an increase in foreclosure
assistance scams targeting homeowners struggling to stay in their homes. To avoid these scams,
remember this advice: Ask your lender if a loan modification is possible. Some businesses
may try to charge you advance fees for this service. This is illegal, and there are non-profit
housing counselors available to help you at no cost. If it sounds too good to be true,
it probably is. NEVER transfer the title of your house to anyone. Scam artists may lure
you in with promises of replacement financing. Finally, some scam artists claim to be affiliated
with government or non-profit agencies. Know exactly with whom you are working and what
you are signing. If you think you’ve been the victim of a scam, or if you need more
information, visit our website at MASS dot GOV backslash A–G–O, or call us at (617)
727-8400.
