Morning, I'm Marlene Duffy and this is bottleplot!
This is a very special moment, because the baby break is over.
Bottleplot is back and we're sitting in my kitchen to taste some wine together.
But this is not my kitchen in Hamburg. I'm in a kitchen very very very
very very far a way from home. I'm in Sydney, Australia at the moment
to check out the Australian wines and wine regions
Let's get right into it. I have found two wonderful,
great wines for you. But first I have to tell you
that I have missed you very much and loved reading your emails that i got from you.
Everyone kept asking: When do you start bottleplot back up again?
Today! Today bottleplot is back!
Also, of course I miss Hamburg big time! I'd love to go out for a beer with my
Sommeliers from Hamburg. But Sydney is cool too
and i love the fact, that Sydney is surrounded by wine regions.
And these two wines are from wine regions not too far from here.
This one is from Orange.
Orange is about 3 hours west from here.
If you head west across the Blue Mountains, then you'll get to Orange.
The vinyards, where the grapes for this wine grow
are at a pretty high altitude
around 800 meters above sea level.
And therefore it's also quite cool there. So, it's a relatively cool region.
I't also snows there on a regular bases, my friends!!
In Germany you think, that it's always really hot everywhere in Austalia.
But they do get snow in Australia! Right now over here it's
late autumn-coming into winter and I just checked the other day
in Orange they just had minus one degree! Rough temperatures!
even in summer when it's hot, it cools right down during the nights
which is known to be good for the acidity in the wine.
So, we've got the 2008 Cabernet Merlot
from Logan Wines! There you go!
With beautifully embroided wine leaves, a very autumny looking wine lable.
47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot
and for a little kick we we've got 8% Cabernet Franc. And that, we want to try.
so
This is exciting!
Color wise, a beautiful deep
vibrant red.
And now we smell
Lots of black, dark cherries.
when they're black they're dark!?!
And fresh purple plum, freshly picked off a tree
that fresh plum aroma, also a bit of oregano.
...dried oregano, dried herbs...
...and from the x-mas corner a bit of cinnamon and clover aromas.
So, let's try this.
That just totally went right next to the bucket.
An incredably acidity
it makes the cherrys really nice and juicy.
Very finely structured tannins, spreading all across the tounge
and now I'm getting a few light red aromas, a little raspberry
and a little bit of cassis on the back end.
And now..
...you get a few espresso beans, a little bit of chocolate,
roasted aromas, a little moccachino
Logan Wines Ladies and Gentlemen
it's got 14,5% alcohol. So, lets go ahead with the next wine.
This one comes from a winery that is also 3 hours away from here
from the Canberra District. You have to head south from here
for about 3 hours. Nick O'Leary is the winemaker
and the wine is the.... that was all mixed up....
This is the 2009 Shiraz from Nick O'Leary! There you go!!
And on the bottle he's got his signature,
and i'd like to know how often he had to practice this signature, that it was pretty enough
to go onto the bottle. He probably had to do it a few times, a few hundred times.
13,5% alcohol.
And in Canberra, too, it snows sometimes. It's also a cooler wine region.
So! Colour wise, again a strong intense red.
And now, let's smell
Totally different to the first wine. This one is fruit driven - there is some fruit in this one, too,
I've got fat black boysenberries.
But.. these boysenberries are wrapped in bacon and fried.
Boysenberry bacon wraps!
And it's more in the veggie corner
baked veggies and black olives
So, let's try!
OK, a medium acidity, really smooth tannins,
and also a creaminess in the back.
It's got salty touches to it, a little savory
and a few baked chestnuts.
You slit them open up the top and bake them in a pan with salt.
When you eat them, there is a bit of salt on there. Salty with nutty aromas.
Together with my boysenberry bacon wraps.
So.
My wine friends.
If you can get your hands on these bottles
you should grab them!
And that's it from my side for now!
I will look for new wines that i can show you.
Until then, i'm looking forward to your emails and comments
and i'll see you next time, Ciao!
