Now that my paint is dry. It didn't take long since it's acrylic.
The paint down here that had the chalk in it dried really fast.
I lost some of the hue
in the rock area.
The value is about right.
A good thing to do if you've got the hue and value right is to glaze
a little bit.
I'm also going to glaze the water down just a hair
The white caps
are almost totally white in a few places so I need to push that back
and give it a little bit
more quality to the surface.
And push the values
just a little bit
and then go back in with some chalk and some titanium white
and just hit the
tops of the texture and it should look
like frothy water
It should look pretty good.
What you don't want to do with glazing is push
the color down in value too
fast, if you do
that the color will get
over saturated and have an over-ripe look
that I don't like.
You have to be very careful, glaze very slowly.
I'm now working in acrylics I can let it dry
put in another wash, let that dry and build up glazes slowly.
The key is to step back frequently
and assess how the color had shifted.
If the values start to shift then you've gone too far.
I'm going to try oiling up
the canvas with some acrylic medium.
Acrylict medium looks white when it's wet
and that's somewhat akin to liquid chalk so I will have to put it on
really thin so it doesn't affect my values
too badly. Then I can paint into it.
I want to go into more detail over here. This area is hogging up all the attention.
Your eye just kind of swoops up
here and stops. I want to carry that over here and have a little bit of movement here with these branches and pull the eye back in
so your eye swirls around the canvas in a very controlled fashion.
There are also some dark spots here and
I lost some of the warm spots so I want to get rid of some of the dark areas.
The dark area makes a line across the bottom which traps the eye.
I like this color right here I might restate that to kind of break that up.
If you have one of anything you have a dot.
If the dot is elongated you have a line.
If you have two elongated dots you have two lines.
But if you have three shapes
you start to have a tone.
Before I start glazing I want to make an assessment
of the values in this areas so I can monitor
any value shifts.
These values are 5, 6
Here it shifts from a 4 to a 5. Which is too much of a shift.
I will probably glaze this down and try to make this
a five value.
The paint with the chalk is pretty absorbent.
Or I'm assuming it will be as I've actually never done this.
I'm going to spray some water on there.
I hope the color doesn't
soak in too much.
It looks like it's not soaking in too bad.
That's good.
[The chalk is actually making a very good surface to glaze]
I was going to glaze this on the floor but I decided to do it on the easel.
I thought I could probably get as much texture standing up like this so I figured
why bother putting it on the floor.
I'm going to knock that color down a little bit.
You can see where it starts to accentuate the brush strokes there.
If it persists doing that too much you can add some zinc white to mellow the texture a bit.
Be sure to just add a very small amount
otherwise it will
it will go chalky and start becoming a scumble.
I need
to step back here really bad
because I may be over doing this glaze.
I won't know until
I step back.
It's not too bad, I did over do it
just a hair.
When you wipe the glaze off a little
it will leave a residue of pigment so be sure to take the majority of it off.
you can see you can get a really nice texture this way
which I love. I love texture a lot.
This texture
has flattened out a bit and
that's strange
There are some additives I might try to add to this acrylic.
Additives from Golden Acrylics
that will keep
the dimensionality of the stroke.
[Checking with the value finder]
I want to check the values.
That area is about a 5.
Yeah. It's not too
far off actually, just a
little bit
too gray.
This is
Anthracrinone Blue.
It's a grayish blue
similar to
Ultramarine Blue
You can move too fast and get it
too dark.
That value is a 5. That area is a 5 too amazingly enough.
I was grazing with blue and obviously lost some of my warms so I will go back in and restate
some colors and try to work in a little bit more
of this moss and some of this red color and maybe some
orange where that moss
might be picking up some light.
I mixed up a little titanium white,
straight on my cement trowel.
