I never expected the public service or the graduate program
to be as exciting as it was.
I think it's about taking something and making it into
something that customers can actually use
so taking really complex information and doing
things to it so that it actually makes sense
to somebody who needs to know something that’s
really important at their point in life.
I studied a Bachelor of Communications specialising in public relations
and then I started in the graduate program here in August 2007
and now I am a senior media advisor within the media section.
I think the graduate program had a really big impact
on my career especially in the early stages.
There was a lot of training opportunities that
I might not have got if I hadn't come in through the graduate program.
A lot of networking opportunities
and I think it was just a really good stepping stone.
For me the most important thing about this job is
that I get to do something different every single day.
I am dealing with different people every single day.
No issue is ever the same
I never have the same day two days in a row
and I never expect anything.
An average day in the office could be anything
given the shear scope of the organisation
you never can really expect what issue may arise throughout the day
so it may be something like dealing with a media inquiry
from a journalist that could be really complex
to helping a staff member develop their skills in handling inquires from journalists
as well as developing briefing material for the executive across the department.
Work life balance has always been a priority for me.
So I am planning a wedding at the end of the year,
to go home play with my puppy
spend time with my partner.
So it's really important to me that I am within a work place
that is supportive of that
and that I can walk away at the end of the day
and know I have done a really hard day’s work
still be able to enjoy my personal time at home.
Elwood is an 11 month old Springer spaniel
he is really cheeky, we got him for my birthday last year
and he has a lot of energy, needs a lot ofexercise
and is really really cute.
Probably one of the most influential bits of work
that I have done in my time here was during the 2010/2011 floods
where I was working in a really high paced environment
everyday was different, there were different issues cropping up all the time
and I was performing a role where I was bringing
all of the communication activity together to one single point of contact
and to me that was really important
because there was visible outcomes in the community
for all the work that I was doing
in terms of letting people know what they could apply for
how they could apply for it
and where to go, where to get information.
For anyone who is looking at this particular graduate program
I can't recommend it highly enough.
I've really enjoyed my time here and I have had
a lot of opportunities here that I probably
wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else
and I have done really well in my career in such a short period.
