New HP UPD Installer for USB Plug and Play. Objectives.
Discuss the new USB Plug and Play features of the HP UPD installer.
Walk through what the selections do.
Walk through an example on a Windows 7 32-bit system.
Starting with UPD 5.6.5, new options for Windows Vista and later Windows operating systems
add the ability to:
Select USB mode for USB Plug and Play.
Remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from Windows driver store.
Add HP Universal Printing Driver to Windows driver store.
Provides the ability to:
Search for HP plug and play printer driver inf files in the Windows driver store.
Remove HP UPD printer driver inf files.
Add HP Universal Printing Driver inf files to Windows driver store for Staging the driver.
Simplifies USB Plug and Play installs.
Adds HP UPD inf files to the Windows driver store.
Including adding inf files for Dot4 and LEDM to the Windows driver store.
Dot4 and LEDM are communication protocols used with USB connected printers.
Enables greater control over driver matching for Plug and Play.
User or administrator decides what driver or drivers they want to use.
Adding a new network based printer to the printer's folder only adds specific inf
files to the Windows driver store.
Inf files required for USB Plug and Play such as Dot4 or LEDM inf files are not added.
With the new installer, selecting "Add HP Universal Printing" driver to "Windows driver
store" adds the following to driver store:
HP UPD 5.6.5 inf files
HP EWS UPD inf
HP PNP EWS Null inf
HP PNP Fax Null inf
HP PNP Scan Null inf
Dot 4 inf files for various HP products
HP Printer LEDM inf
Plug and play will always search for a driver.
Plug and Play expects a driver to be available.
With the new installer, the user or administrator decides what driver or drivers they want to use.
Using the HP RemovePNPDrivers tool, we can view the inf files in the Windows driver store
prior to running the installer.
HP RemovePNPDrivers.exe:
This utility searches for HP plug and play printer driver files in the Windows driver
store, and provides an option to remove these staged printer driver files. Currently installed
printers are unaffected by this utility.
Note that only the default location for staged driver files on Windows (%SYSTEMROOT%\inf)
will be searched for driver files.
HP RemovePNP Drivers executable is available in the HP PARK (www.hp.com/go/upd).
To access the new features:
Open the directory for the HP Universal Printing Driver (v5.6.5 or later).
Double click Install.exe.
When the license dialog appears, click Yes.
Select USB mode- Plug and Play.
When you select USB mode - Plug and Play in the driver, by default the following are
both selected:
Remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from Windows driver store.
Add 'HP Universal Printing PCL 6' driver to Windows driver store.
If you uncheck "Remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from Windows driver
store" and click Next.
The HP UPD is added to Windows driver store and no inf files are removed.
Note: No UPD printer is installed, the UPD is only added to the driver store.
HP UPD 5.6.5 inf files are added to driver store.
No HP UPD drivers are removed.
Inf files for the following are also added:
HP EWS UPD inf
HP PNP EWS Null inf
HP PNP Fax Null inf
HP PNP Scan Null inf
Dot 4 inf files for various HP products
HP Printer LEDM inf
If you uncheck Add HP Universal Printing driver to Windows driver store and click Next, only
the HP UPD inf files are removed and no inf files are added.
Note: This option is useful if you plan to utilize a device specific driver for plug
and play installations.
All HP UPD drivers are removed from Windows driver store.
No non-HP UPD drivers are impacted.
This only impacts the Windows driver store.
No Printer drivers are removed.
No existing print queues are impacted.
If you leave both items checked, remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from
Windows driver store and add "HP Universal Printing PCL 6" driver to Windows driver
store.
All current HP UPD drivers are removed from Windows driver store.
The new HP UPD inf files are added to Windows driver store.
INF files for the following are added: HP EWS UPD inf
HP PNP EWS Null inf
HP PNP Fax Null inf
HP PNP Scan Null inf
Dot 4 inf files for various HP products
HP Printer LEDM inf
No non-HP UPD drivers are impacted.
In this example we will walk through the following steps:
Disable Windows Update temporarily.
Remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from Windows driver store.
Add "HP Universal Printing PCL 6" driver to Windows driver store.
Add a new USB connected printer using the HP UPD PCL 6 driver we just added to Windows
driver store.
As an initial step for this video, we already downloaded and extracted the PCL 6 HP Universal
Printing Driver version 5.6.5, and the HP PARK tools.
From www.hp.com/go/upd
To use the HP UPD, disable Automatic Updates during the install process.
In some Windows operating systems, the system automatically checks to see if there is a
closer match for the driver on Windows Update.
If Windows Update is set to Automatic, the device specific driver may be loaded instead
of the HP UPD.
To Disable Windows Update:
Click Start and then Control Panel.
Scroll down and click Windows Update.
In the Windows Update dialog, click Change settings.
In the Important Updates drop down, click Never check for updates.
Click OK and close the Windows Update dialog.
NOTE: We are only turning off Windows Update temporarily.
Open the HP UPD Installer:
Access the directory in which the driver was extracted.
Double click the driver folder.
Double click the PCL 6 folder.
Scroll down and double click Install.exe.
Read and then click Yes to accept the End User License Agreement.
Select USB mode - Plug and Play.
Verify 'Remove all versions of HP Universal Printing Driver from Windows driver store'
is selected.
Verify "Add HP Universal Printing PCL 6" driver to "Windows driver store." is selected.
Click Next.
Installer identifies inf files for previous versions of HP UPD and removes the files.
Installer stages the HP UPD inf files in Windows driver store.
The UPD INF files staged in the windows driver store will be utilized for any future HP printer
plug and play USB connection.
Verify the printer is on and in the Ready state.
When prompted, connect a USB cable between the printer and the computer.
When the dialog appears, click OK.
During the Plug and Play event, the driver installation searches for all possible drivers
that match the device Plug and Play ID:
Windows Update
Device Path
Secure Driver Store
Rank the drivers
Pick the best one
Install the drivers
Remembers the device serial number
When the Plug and Play event finishes, click Close.
Click Finish to close the installer dialog.
NOTE: When you unplug a device, or undock your laptop.
Plug and Play remembers the device serial number so that driver installation does not
occur when you plug the device in again. This is independent of the USB port.
Click Start and then Devices and Printers.
Right click on the new printer queue and click Printer Properties.
Click the Advanced tab and verify the HP Universal Printing PCL 6 driver is the current driver.
Click the About tab and verify the version of the driver.
To print the test page:
Click the General tab.
Click Print Test Page.
Verify the test page prints.
And close the Devices and Printers folder.
To reset Windows Update to your preferred setting:
Click Start and then Control Panel.
Scroll down and click Windows Update.
In the Windows Update dialog, click Change settings.
In the Important Updates drop down, click your preferred setting.
Click OK and close the Windows Update dialog.
