So we've laid the new concrete floor, which was a really positive step forward. It took
a long time to dig out the original floor and we then dug a further 20cm lower than
that in order that we could insulate with our EPS, expanded polystyrene.
And having insulated the floor we then put the steel reinforcing mesh down and then we
laid out the underfloor heating pipes that were fixed to the mesh, and then finally we
poured the next concrete slab over the top.
One of the most unusual aspects of this project is the way that we've insulated the external
walls. The original walls were cavity construction, about 28cm thick but in order to insulate
in such a way that we maintain the brick aesthetic we've added 20cm of insulation to the outside
and then a new brick skin, a new brick wall on the outside to enclose the insulation.
So we've now got super-thick walls but we've maintained the brick aesthetic so it looks
very similar to how it did before.
