Picture this:
You’ve moved 8 times,
always getting rid of all the junk,
and when you call your friends to say “I’m moving!”
– it doesn’t bother them at all.
They know that you don’t need them to haul moving boxes...
But they come by anyway.
You don’t even hang pictures on the wall anymore,
because you’d just have to turn around and fill in all the holes again…
And now you’re sitting there with your 3.5 possessions
when your best friend – who lives in one of the most beautiful areas of Germany – calls and says:
“I’m going on a trip around the world! Will you take care of my apartment?”
Your decision is obvious, isn’t it?
Okay. And now for the complete truth:
My name is Thorsten Kolsch.
I’m 34 years old and currently live in Blankenese
in my best friend’s apartment because she is on a world tour.
She’s jetting around the world,
and I’m sleeping in the same bed every night.
It’s demoralizing.
Even the weekly Skype calls are pretty much torture –
I would even say: my patience with this friendship is being really tested.
Okay, okay, I’m exaggerating a little.
Anja and I are inseparable!
– But you know what I mean, right?
Every morning I went to the office and asked myself how I could change my situation…
Quite a few people work online, are self-employed online and don’t need an office –
– at least not a fixed one.
They call themselves “digital nomads” – and I decide to get to know these people.
The following weeks are like a roller coaster ride:
I meet Germany’s most well-known digital nomads;
I go to the first Digital Nomad Conference in Berlin and see exactly what it’s all about.
In the end, I’ll know if I should pack my things and say to Anja:
“Welcome home! Here’s the key! And now it’s MY turn to hit the road!”
