PHASE 2
- In Phase 2 we developed the project.
Based on the poem, we worked on four key aspects of Catalan literature:
troubadors and lemousins , the medieval sages, decadence and the Renaixença.
The poem talks about “those sages”, referring to writers such as Ramon Llull.
The theme decadence doesn’t emerge immediately. It is a widely discussed, but very useful term.
It refers to the period of crisis in Catalan literature. The poem represents the start of the Catalan literary renaissance in 1833.
We searched for information on the internet and in text books.
Then we summarised the information we had found and wrote it up with 5th Grade Primary students in mind.
- Anna, a teacher from 5th Grade, came to explain how we needed to express ourselves.
- I went to the 4º E.S.O. class to tell them a bit about what 5th grade students are like.
- She dealt with our queries about what vocabulary we could use.
- It was interesting to reflect on the use of language, on the need to express things which seem easy in a different way.
- Before the presentation we did a preliminary questionnaire
to see what ideas they already had about literature and to prepare a little for our presentation.
- I helped them to create the questionnaire.
- We looked at 5th Grade text books and examined the syntax and vocabulary.
We saw that the sentences used aren’t very long and that they use more full stops than commas.
- We handed in a number of different versions to the teacher, until we finally obtained texts which were appropriate for 5th Grade students.
Having to adapt our texts also helped us to understand our explanations much more.
