For citizens of the Saint Petersburg, the Baltic Sea isn't an abstract word.
As the Baltic Sea starts literally behind the threshold of our house.
It is a part of our lives.
During my childhood I went with my parents for a holiday to the Gulf of Finland.
It used to be a resort of the Saint Petersburg.
So we travelled a bit and there was the sea with waves.
And now the shore has been covered by the mess out of stinking liquid
that looks like a spoilt pea soup and the smell is so disgusting.
Unfortunately it is algae, that smell so badly,
and in principle it is manmade work.
As all sewage, chemicals that we discharge to the Gulf of Finland
and also to the Baltic Sea stimulate the overgrowth of algae.
This algae is very dangerous.
It rots and releases the gas accumulated
on the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
And it not only prevents swimming
but also poisons our sea, our water.
I think we should start saving our Baltic sea
from us and from our children.
To teach them the basics of environmentally friendly behavior:
what littering of water causes, how it must be prevented..
We must educate them.
I think, in general, the children facing this problem
can make the world cleaner.
