Hi, we're here today with Jing Liu, designer from JUZD.
How's it going?
It's going good, man. Thanks.
So what's going on today?
Oh, today we're washing, we're washing these jeans.
My favorite pair of jeans, Naked and Famous.
I got these--phew, I think the last, last Spring.
That's when the first collection of JUZD came out.
So, I've been traveling a lot with these jeans too, as you can see.
And, like everywhere I go, like to Vegas, New York, LA, and Miami.
I always wear this pair of jeans with me, so it's kind of progressed with the company.
And I haven't washed, haven't washed these since I got them.
So, they're raw denim.
And so today we're washing them.
We're washing them for the first time.
Right this moment, it's a great moment.
Alright, sounds good.
Alright, let's do it!
So, right now we're soaking the jeans.
And Jing is filling up the bathtub with lukewarm water.
We're going to use this product called Woolite, which is really friendly for raw denim.
To minimize the indigo loss.
Okay, so how high should we fill it up?
About halfway, as long as there's enough water to cover the jeans.
Okay, it's very exciting. That's pretty cool.
And how much of the detergent do we use?
I would recommend filling up to the first line.
Can you see that?
That should be enough for a pair of jeans.
We're not doing a full load.
Alright, and we're dusting the jeans off.
Now some people recommend turning it inside out, but for the purpose of soaking the jeans it's not really necessary.
Okay. And can you explain to us why we should wash the jeans and we should, like, not wash them.
Because I read on some blog that you're not supposed to wash the jeans.
Yeah, there's really two schools of thought.
Some people say never wash the jeans, but I think that you've worn them for 18 months,
which is a rather significant amount of time.
And what happens is all the dirt, grime, sweat that's inside your jeans will start to break down at the denim in terms of the treads--threads.
And you can see on the, the crotch area right here it's actually starting to rip and you can actually kind of see through it.
Exactly, so if that were to continue, what would happen is the crotch would blow out and you'll have a giant hole.
So it's really a compromise: do you want a giant hole for slightly better fades?
Or do you want to maintain the health of the denim?
Then you should soak it more often.
Usually, the minimal mark is about 6 months, but 18 months is more than enough to give it its first soak.
Okay.
And if you could check here.
I like the cuff, and the thing is that after a while-
Can you see this? It's actually starting to break down.
That's kind of cool, too. Right.
Yeah.
All this worn with the cuff-
Gives it character.
Yeah, yeah.
And then, what style is this and what is the grade of the denim?
This one is the Weird Guy Indigo and I believe it's 13.5 ounce.
Okay, cool. And you say this is one of the hardest jeans to fade?
Yes, compared to other lines in their For Men's. They have Deep Indigo and 21 ounce and those tend to fade faster.
Okay, cool man. So I did a pretty good job working these in, you know?
It's the best I can do, I guess.
Definitely. Alright.
So is that enough?
Yeah that should be enough, but I would pour the laundry detergent in first
so that it mixes well and you get some bubbling action going on.
Let's get some bubbling action.
Doesn't it smell good?
Yeah.
Smells like chemicals, yummy.
Alright, you can toss them in now.
Okay, so just toss them in?
Yeah, what I recommend is shake it up a bit.
Like, move it around just to get rid of some of the, loosen up the dirt and grime.
Yeah--work that in.
Work it.
Yeahhh--
Very nice.
I don't know if the jeans will stay under by itself, though sometimes you might need to put some weight on it.
Like myself? Should I jump in the tub with the jeans?
You could if you want.
Or you could use this big bottle of bleach.
Okay.
But, actually, it looks like it's holding down fairly decently.
I think there's enough dirt and garbage in the jeans to sink anything.
You can already see the water turning a bit brown from all that nastyness that's collected in your jeans.
So you could imagine how all this bacteria and sweat collecting over the years.
You see, this is crazy, so it's like all this dirt and stuff in here is like what's been happening with me the last 18 months.
Kinda like seeing life flash before your eyes, like soapy water.
Pretty much.
Yeah.
Okay, so how long should we leave it in here for?
I would say about 45 minutes.
Oh, okay.
