A former Maori leader is disputing restrictions Te Papa has established
with regards to pregnant and menstruating woman
viewing some exhibits.
Heta Gardiner has our explanation.
There are some Maori taonga in this collection,
but Te Papa has put some restrictions on them,
in accordance with tikanga Maori.
Museums throughout have been invited
to see some special taonga at Te Papa,
some which have not been shown to the public.
Te Papa Museums agreed to uphold Maori tikanga
with regards to the Maori taonga.
But Donna Awatere-Huata does not agree.
This former Maori leader does not concur.
Te Papa has warned women of the consequences
if tikanga is not upheld.
The Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Chris Finlayson
was reluctant to make a stand either way on this issue,
saying he did not get involved in the day-to-day running of Te Papa.
The exhibit tour starts next month.
