Hi Jauntaristas, this is Suzie Holmes, Jauntaroo's Chief World Explorer and today we'll be exploring
Dahlonega, GA. Located about 70 miles north of Atlanta, Dahlonega is Georgia's golden
city and the gateway to the Appalachian Mountains. Known for being the site of the first major
US gold rush, the historic district is now home to the gold museum, gold mines, and gold
panning facilities. One of these is the Consolidated Gold Mines where Miner Mike was my tour guide.
First stop was the mine tour to wander underground and learn about the process of mining gold.
You might even spot a critter or two. Once you've learned about the miners, try your
hands panning for gold using water and a rigged pan. Just don't expect to strike it rich.
Or use the water powered flumes to uncover gemstones including emeralds, rubies, quartz
and many more. Once you've found your treasures, be sure to stop by the gift shop for one of
their handcrafted gemstone creations. Many wineries have taken notice of Dahlonega's
prime growing conditions and have made the area their home. Situated atop a mountain
ridge the Wolf Mountain Vineyards and Winery commands a spectacular view of the rolling
foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. A wide range of European and American varietals
and blends are offered at each tasting room, each of which has its own distinctive personality.
The tastings combined with amazing mountain views and rows and rows of colorful fruit
filled vines give guests a complete sensory experience. The Wolf Mountain Vineyards and
Winery display an old world ambience with their cellar and cask room. Dahlonega offers
recreational activities year round and includes miles of hiking trails, camping, horse back
riding, cycling, trout fishing, and more than thirty waterfalls to explore. If you're up
for a round of golf visit the Achasta Golf Club a Jack Nicholas signature golf course.
Achasta offers players 18 challenging holes of golf with a peaceful setting of the Chestatee
River and the Appalachian Mountains. No matter what you choose to do in Dahlonega, you'll
find yourself jumping for joy.
