Hello and welcome to Let's Look at Steam Marines with Rusty Shackleford
This is a nice little tactical RPG in space.
The enemies seem especially strong at points.
The main goal seems to be to avoid them.
It definitely feels like a roguelike, in that death is around every corner.
I get the same feeling of dread from opening a door and spotting a half dozen robots as
I do from finding a monster zoo in Dungeons of Dredmor.
A single misstep can often mean a half dead soldier.
Heavens forbid you throw a grenade in the wrong spot.
The spaceship is meant to be steampunk
It isn't all too noticeable at this point.
That is sure to change with more content.
Your marines are going to die, but usually one by one.
So yeah, have fun trudging around short one or two marines.
Thankfully you can find new "recruits" from time to time, by way of half dead and half
crazed doctors and engineers that found guns.
The enemies offer a wide range of tactics even at this early level.
At first they are mostly melee robots that move slowly
A few levels in and you start finding faster melee...
And flame tossing robots. Yeah.
There's aliens as well in the further content
Those guys are much more of a threat.
The game has quite a lot of customization as well.
You can choose between one of four classes
A fifth class is soon to come as well.
The leader type uses a shotgun, so why not pick him?
The grenadier is your standard explosives guy and heavy hitter.
A scout comes in handy for well... Scouting. And a rifle.
The support class fits several niches and has a machine gun for faster firing, based
on the old maxim, more bullets mean they die faster.
The fifth class is going to be an engineer type that will most likely prove quite useful.
At the end of each level you get a completion screen with stats including things like squad
member deaths.
The current objective seems to be to get to the elevator and go to the next floor
I find it useful to search the entire floor for more loot and enemies to kill.
Killing enemies isn't the only way to get experience either.
You also get some from finding the enemies.
Once you have enough experience you can get a promotion
And gain some useful skills.
Each class has their own set of 2 different skills per level,
Not to mention 6 attributes to increase.
So you can make several varities of soldiers from each class to fit what is neeeded.
There's also melee fighting
I only knew about ranged combat in this video.
Don't be like me, save your ammo.
When you run out of ammo you might go quite some time before you find more.
So especially on the early levels when the enemies are weaker and don't move as fast,
swing at them instead of firing at them.
You can also customize the way you fire your weapons too, making them more accurate or
giving you better vision.
There's a ton of items to find and use to help you out too.
The terrain destruction is a necessity for traversing the ship.
And it is a ton of fun to break down walls.
HULK SMASH!
Other plans for the future include making separate deck types.
That way each level has its own unique feel to it.
There's also plans to make the enemies all that much more annoying.
Destroying an entire ship? Sure.
Oh. Meteor showers.
I really like the feel of the game as it is now.
Little touches like portholes like you'd see on a submarine really make it feel steampunk.
That and the little chimneys on some of the walls for the steam.
The squad overview page is pretty nice.
It shows you important stats like ammo.
It also has info on the speed of your characters and their other stats like armor and such.
Each character seems to have these randomly assigned at start.
I am guessing it is somewhat based on class, but I've had a fast grenadier.
The game has decent sound effects too, though that didn't save too well on this video.
I originally glanced at this game because it reminded me of Dungeon Dashers.
But this game has little in common, aside from the tactical gameplay.
This game feels a lot more deadly.
When I lose a soldier, I feel a real sense of loss.
I enjoy the dark feeling of it, bumbling around never knowing when an enemy is going to attack.
I should stop naming them after friends and fellow Let's Players.
In this video I've got Fortune Voyager, a fellow LPer.
Psyanide, another fellow LPer.
Eteru, my roommate.
Psyanide gets to use explosives because I'm certain he enjoys explosives.
Fortune Voyager and myself are shotgun lovers. For sure.
Eteru gets his scout on.
There's a wide range of things to do, and the game is highly replayable.
Modding stuff will be added, eventually too.
So yeah, what's there not to love?
Overall the game feels really good.
