The history
of our culture is such that when a child enters school
the first thing that they learn is that african-americans
were slaves. it can be very discouraging
it can be heart-breaking you go through all these different emotions
and then you wonder how do I fit in
we'd go to music classes and gymnastic classes and yoga classes and
april would be the only child of color in the room I don't know if she was
internalizing it but
it felt like we were failing her
you have to remember your people danced for a reason and when you get away from that
you lose the meaning behind it. everybody who's been in this company
has transformed somehow
I gave you african dance first and you've got to understand
you as a person
you got to expand the horizons and that's kind of what I see this is being is
the ability to expand horizons and give kids an option
it's not always about rap it's not always about basketball it's not always about football
