Television arrived in time for the 1936 Olympics, took on and improved over the next 40 years.
[pause] it even went international.
[pause] Despite all that the broadcaster still called
the shots they dictated what shows were aired and when.
[pause] The arrival of the VCR in 1975 gave viewers
the opportunity to modify and expand their TV experience, but caused consternation as
film studios sued for breach of copyright. The legal battle when on for ages but VCR's
were here to stay. [pause]
Until something better came along of course and that was the digital video recorder 20
years later. the DVR changed the game. Viewers could watch what they liked when they liked.
Ads could just be bypassed which meant media producers broadcasters and advertisers had
to rethink things [pause]
Clip – what do we do now? [pause]
and try new strategies like product placement [pause]
digitalisation provided the means for TV shows to be shared quickly around the globe but
things continued the old way with international release delayed for months or sometimes years
for purely commercial reasons. People took things into their own hands.
One of my favourite shows is Doctor Who. My mates tell me on Facebook what's going on.
I can't wait for the show to arrive. [pause]
Some media producers used downloading to succeed. The overflow of TV into other media like the
web games and movies along with merchandising made huge profits for the media producers
providing the partnerships worked and the shows didn't bomb
[pause] but if things went wrong the losses could
be massive. [pause]
And of course, people had to be able to find the content in a sea of competition. This
show stuff on the web is great, but how do I find it all?
With online sites thriving viewers are becoming producers too.
I watch TV while I'm on Facebook. Films converged to the TV space too, but there
were problems. Movies were only available in the US.
I keep getting blocked here. Traditional broadcasters were losing ground,
but the picture was confusing, as the ratings agencies were losing track of millions of
viewers. Mainly the ones going mobile. I watch TV on my mobile all the time. I couldn't
do without it! [pause]
Broadcast TV is booming in emerging markets like India with millions of new viewers. But
so too is internet penetration and internet TV is also growing quickly.
The good thing about TV just now is you can watch just about anything anywhere you like.
