on what the heck is health and wellness Wednesdays
it's something I created I'm starting in January
I started to do these healthy long as webinars
our seminars every other week
on at Caldwell college and
it was great at and some great guess there
had some great topics there number one the biggest
points that were brought up was that people want it to you
be able to see this online or they wanted to not have to travel to call a
college to see it
arm so I decided to you take these health and wellness
Wednesday seminars on out of cola college
am bringing it online to the online audience I felt like there will be a lot
more of an audience that could be seen
online so thats way really where help the one as Wednesday's came from
and work on this website are serious because I'm gonna be doing these pretty
of it
um an today's topic
I'm Isabel emotional wellness %uh
today unfortunately September 11th could be fortunately could be unfortunately
on missus at a very emotional day for many people I'm some people lost loved
ones
people lost friends some people were just on
at the site what happened and likely got out a bit and now they have a hard time
forgetting it I'm so it's an emotional day so I figured
why not use this day to talk about some
emotional up while missteps because I'm
it's okay to remember this event it's okay to even be a little upset about
this event
but is not OK when these types of events that happen
affect your overall health that's where it starts to get towards that
um the area that we don't want to be an so it's okay it's you
think about these emotional times but we don't want to affect our health
so as you know today's topic is tips for emotional of hell
so
I always start with my agenda for every talk but I do I want to get on the same
page
up with you guys so anything that I'm
I go over I want you to be able to be on the same page as me
and now that it's about the console arm in order to talk about
just wellness in general not just emotional wellness
we'd understand what are some stressors in our life
that could affect our wellness I'm so we're gonna discuss the three major
stressors
in our life then
we want to talk about what did the stressors that we're gonna talk about
affect our health what does it do to our elf
on that we were
understand how our emotional states
relate to our health
and then we're gonna go into some practical tips
for staying in being in optimal
emotional health because people don't realize how important it is
to have oMG good emotional wellness
if really sets the stage for other areas in our life
so what is stress so we
stress we talk about three major stressors
that occurred to human being those three stressors are number one
our physical stress
number two
chemical stresses order we also could call their metabolic stress is or just
stresses that are in our that we ingest in our body or inhaling our body
up and lastly is our emotional stresses
those are three major things that
really has an enormous impact
on your overall health it could be I'm positive it could be negative
and we wanna kinda thumb through somebody's throughout this
%uh webinar to kinda go through what
stress can do to us so what is physical stress
our physical stress are stresses on our physical body
so that could be from things Lake our
exercise or lack thereof exercise so exercise could be
um positive or negative you know there's some people out there that
exercise %uh too much
they put so many hours on their body and then end up actually being
negative I'm on their on their overall health rather than positive
so there is too much exercising on
and then obviously not exercising enough is also
a negative stress our body I'm so that's something we want to think about
then you got also have to think about your posture I talk about
Asher probably in every when are the ideal in every talk but I do it every
meeting and I have what somebody because posture is the window to your spine
and the windows your spine
meaning that what's going on outside is also going on inside
so if we sit there and we have horrible posture unfortunately that means we have
a lot of stress on our spine which when you have stressed on the spine
it but an abnormal stress on the nervous system
which is our control center and then when there's just one message to them
now we're gonna start to display some symptoms in our body
could be a pain it could be a week yes it could be um
be getting sick it could be a totally I
thing that we don't even think about like becoming depressed
these are all nervous system changes so
when you don't have good posture that she has won it
big indication that you're having stress in the nervous system as well
I'll our way you know obesity is one of the biggest
at epidemics right now um where probably
I could I'm pretty confident they were probably the largest nation
in the world %uh n I'm not we should be proud to say that
the way that we eat in america armies unfortunately
making us larger and larger and its unfortunately also
making us more unhealthy I'm if you think about us
in ranking with the rest of the world we spend the most money
on health care we have the most sophisticated healthcare
yet when you break us with other industrialized country where one of the
most unhealthy
in the world so it's saying that we're using
or were thinking about Hell in the wrong way when I thinking about health about
health care
were thinking about it more about getting rid of a symptom
a mess I really health care less more crisis care so I'm
thats that's a part of physical stress that is not gonna be
really changing the way that our overall health is and that we are
we'll ask you gonna talk about is organomet X
how are we sitting at work how are we sitting at home
how we sitting in the car how are we
Senate set up an art desk you know at work what is their economics
up the body throughout our day because it's very important
so you're sitting at a desk is that computer at your
on I level or is a
a laptop where it's down low enough to look down towards the
towards the screen to look a or do you have
HC that is too high
we're now your way up n your your arms are really high up
to you type on the computer so there's so many ergonomic
on things that are going on here that we wanna keep
enough in mind me about physical stress
so next we want to talk about on chemical stress
that's the next one we always talk about and that's our
that's important to know because that's the stress that we ingest
into our body so that could be anything from
the food that we eat to the
drinks that we're putting in our body arm
could be it could be that I i'm
in legal or illegal drugs that are given to us
up you know that wanted the biggest things that is given to us
one where sick is drugs an
unfortunately
drugs aren't the answer all the time they're great for many situations and
I'm not
sitting here saying drugs are not needed but they're needed in the right
situations not
of situations so when we see here and you're sitting in your chair and you
have some
you know neck pain in her lower back pain it doesn't mean you have to go get
a muscle relaxer an anti-inflammatory
there might be something going on underline that's causing that
email I get that checked out so drugs are good for certain things but not good
for all things
and that's a differentiation I wanna throw out there
because I'm not trying to say drugs are bad I'm so
but that is added to the stress of our body
so the more medication you gonna be on the more stress you're gonna happen
nervous system and it might
affect your overall L
in
um alcohol
all goes in with the same category as drugs by
um
alcohol is
is a stressor in our body that's gonna cause on
some changes in our brain function which is going to change the way our body
functions
on but then you gotta think of chemical stress as shatters also from our
environment
you know we don't think about the things that we breed in
can affect our overall hell so that pollution
on Decca be if you work in um
a a mining mining I facility or something along those lines we're going
to bring in a lot of use
those are all gonna be stresses to the body so that some
you know that goes into the the he had a great chemical stresses
so we think about how to be calm to help the issue could be
you gotta think about all these categories you don't want to just say
all I don't have any pain and eicher
I can run down the street without any so I'm healthy
you gotta think of every area of your life
you know motion only physically Chem you know when you bring in your body
those are that's how you become the healthiest that you can be
up and that's really what I want to reiterate to people as it's not a bell
you know not having a symptom it's about how having
balance and and wellness in all areas of your life
so this brings us to our emotional stress that's our topic for today
arm but how many of us actually think about our emotional state and what it
does to our body
cuz I could probably say this is money most overlooked stresses
to the human body you know people are always caring about their physical
stress
all you know I hope your way to lose weight or a to start exercising people
have that
wired in their brain sometimes people are
you know go a little further and they say no I'm not eating well or
you know I I you know I may be
drinking too much so I should start you know backing off on how much I drink
those are all the chemical just as they might know that but is not many times
people think about
you know their emotional stress you know how affective
that is on the body because it really could
destroy somebody's hell Eunos there there's some people out there that
no matter what situation there in it's always a negative stress
you know so they may be at work and its I consider being excited at work
like up at work gotta drag through the day
you know so they bit just thinking that way is gonna change the way the entire s
the day goes for you
you're gonna have a lot of *** stress in the body that is needed
just because your mentality isn't there I'm
you know in a more positive light so
are emotional stresses is is very
I'm influenced it's a big influence on our overall health
so if you wanna go over there
so how
and how we deal with our motion has an overwhelming effect
on our health I can just you know what over that right now but
I can't say that enough and that's something that we want to know what
tight johnnie and really stressed today I'm so
the more stress from life
that isn't dealt with in the most ideal manner
that stress now gets handed to the nervous system
and now our health starts to decline
so
some people like to just throw their stress underneath the rug and just say
air you know I'm just not gonna deal with it and the more that happens the
more you're putting that weight back on your shoulders
and just keep weighing down on you and it's really important to understand that
it a stressful situation needs to be dealt with and has to be dealt with in a
way that
it's not going to be in your mind for for ever
you know for the rest of the day of rest of the week you know something this
I'll I would like to say that if something inside me this
that stressing it bother you get it out talk about it talk about it to
lovelorn talk about you a friend just
because when it's inside if you eating you alive when it added you
it's like you the words our help that day is stress is out and it's just like
let the what the world Europe that you don't do that inside you
so we keep talking about
dress we talked about physical stress we talk about chemical stress
we talked about emotional stress but what does the word stress or one ish
the stress is actually do your body is actually a stress response in our body
the more stressed that we start to have there is a reaction in our body and i
wanna go over some of those things because very important now
so weak
all this our fight or flight response so
there's certain responses in our binders are things that are gonna happen nobody
would become very stressed
think love a situation like if
you were sitting in your room right now and there was a
a eight high here that was about to run into the room
that would be considered pretty stressful %uh
and what are the bodily responses that are gonna happen when that
straight when their Tiger runs into the room
so that I won't discuss right now so there's a couple things that are going
to happen
is a couple things that are going to increase
so what's gonna increase our heart rate
if you increase our blood pressure is gonna increase
we're gonna start to sweat a little bit more sweat glands are gonna start to
open up
and then we have some changes even in our blood I'm
chemistry so our cholesterol is gonna increase
are cortisol injury increased we're gonna get this Russia adrenaline to get
away from that Tiger
on your blood sugars can increase all love this sensory systems
hearings smell vision they're all gonna get high and so key
here and see everything to get away on
clotting factors in our body Sr increase we may start getting zaidi because
what the heck that huge Tigers game and I'm getting a little anxious
I'm gonna get away and then obviously you can also get increases in depression
because
you get scared me and and some of our thoughts can be more depressive
so those are some good things that happen arm to the *** fight or flight
response
now if we step back in a moment and look at
some other things that
have increased arm heart rate
blood pressure core cholesterol
arm
our blood sugar how many people out there
in america are on a blood pressure lowering truck
or on a cholesterol lowering drug or
is are diabetic and having I'm issues with their
lecture um I can't tell you
how many times somebody comes the office in dhahran something in
with around that around that route is but
Wes important to know here is if they're very stressed
whether physically chemistry or emotionally if they're very stressed
those things are gonna increase and now they get there are drugs to lower that
but if you don't remove that stress you're just adding a drug your body that
may not be needed if you just deal with the stress
and hand and start to control that stress so
it's pretty important understand that some other responses in our body
might be there because over reaction to something else is happening in our life
not because we're lacking a cholesterol-lowering drug
were a blood pressure lowering drug so I want to reiterate that
you guys because
there's always a cause to what's going on it's not just
at the Blue gets into there something that causes that
so it's very very very important for us to understand that
and realize that if our blood pressure is always higher for heart rates always
high
maybe were under a lot of stress and that's just the natural
bodies I'm stress response so
that was very important I believe for you guys to now
and so we talk about some things that increase
but we gotta talk about some things that decrease so
so what are some things that happened so we have these things that are happening
in in a in a way that they're increasing now we gotta think about what decreases
so are blighted to our organs are going to increase because the blood goes from
the
organs I'm now it's hard to go to the
muscles in our arms or legs up because we want to run away from that stressful
situation I'm our digestion
start to decrease because that blood is now not going into the digestive system
is gone what your muscles
she could get away Omar kidney functions start to change
our *** function start to change our growth factors in our view and function
starts to change in decrease our ability to concentrate our short term memory
start to change so on knows take another step back and look at now what decreases
so there's many many people that come into our office
and many people just out there american dad have issues with digestion
there if they're not doing enough or they're going to much
on people that are having issues with that maybe they're going through some
stressful situation and it's another response from the stress
arm
ability to concentrate in our short term memory arm
there is a humongous epidemic
out there called ADD or ADHD um
maybe that child or that adult is under a lot of stress whether it's chemically
physically or emotionally that could cause their concentration levels to be
different
so I'm when you look at this list of what the stress response does to your
body
you get to see so many symptoms that are happening
that are occurring from this response that there's a drug out there for every
symptom
but it's not the reason why not having that said
I'm sorry to miss your having a symptom is not because you're lacking that drug
it's because there's something stressful
in the body that's causing this to occur and that's something that you want to
look inside a view in say
well how am i doing physically MIA exercising
MIA seeing how my spine and nervous system is working by going to the
chiropractor
MIA I'm you know eating well
MI doing the right things that are gonna keep me
healthy um look at the way you're thinking are you always thinking that
every situation
is negative order you know every stress in a
that happens to you is at the end of the world you know
those are things you wanna look into to see is it something you could change
because I guarantee
if you start to change those things in your life those symptoms issue
are are having are gonna start to go away
just because the bodies naturally gonna know how to heal itself
that's what the body does the body is a natural healer
when you have all these toxic things coming yes
from our thoughts to do with the foods that we eat to be lack of exercise
those are toxic to our body there's no way you could thrive
in a system like that
so on it supports an update
the centers are having could be a part of stress
and up are the stress response so
II call this next slide the neurology of thought
because um the way that we think is actually
under control over nervous system so believe it or not
there is a big difference in the way we think
unless I the brain versus the way we think on the right side of the brain
so it's really powerful to know this because
we all have an imbalance in
are nervous system in the brain more specifically
where one side usually is stronger than the other
so if you are somebody that has a stronger
right side of the brain person to lesser degree you're gonna think
differently then the person that has a stronger left side a break back to the
right side agree
so week we can be wired to think more negatively
nurses positively it's important to know because if you know that your
you have this stronger functional right first left side
it's something we could work with as chiropractors and as doctors
they try to balance that out
so let's talk about the right person left brain
so the right side of the brain
is your cautious side of the brain it's decided
is gonna be very leery of things it's gonna say
you know maybe we shouldn't do that because it's not the safest a
so
if you are stronger in the right side of the brain
you're gonna be that cautious person or that
step fearful person as always gonna make decisions
%uh based on
you know of fear or negative go up whereas
the left side a brain is the opposite side that's our goal getter
that's the one that's gonna wanna be positive if that's the one is gonna
wanna
think about things in a positive way so
it's extremely important to understand this because
sometimes we are wired to think a certain class II
doesn't mean that it's okay to think that like that it just means that the
way that we've developed
in our in our life has brought us to this
net might be a little bit more negative response to end this
this store about the neurology of the white is huge
for people there because people their depressive tended to be
more strong on the right side of the brain weaker a lesser degree in stove we
start to do some things that you
to strengthen up imbalance out those parts for the brain
the depressive symptoms start to go away and I can't tell you how many times it
happens
in a chiropractic office amazing on
so hey let's talk about the vicious cycle
because there is a cycle that happens here so more we start to have changes in
our nervous system
um the nervous system might change
when we have these emotional imbalances so now we have the nervous system
imbalance is affecting our emotional state
so we have imbalance in the nervous system
now the imbalance in the nervous system is gonna cause imbalances in the
motional state
now that im out the emotional state
starts to you I'm give us the inability to
deal with arc stress is optimally so now
we have this stress
that we don't know how to deal with we're not dealing with up to play
so now the increases are stress because we're not dealing with it
and that increased stress response causes and more Vernon downs
nervous system so we have in this cycle where nervous system cause imbalances in
our motion on state
now we have to deal with the stresses and if we don't do it
optimally now we're increasing that stress Inc reserve the stress is gonna
got more
so in less you start to deal with things there
causing this vicious cycle it's just gonna keep
reiterating itself and men now that's how we can start to diminish our health
or longer
so we want to make sure we stay away from that up so
so our food for thought
what is our food for thought research has she suggested that
week eat you ones are what we eat affects
our moods so it's important to understand that
we are home we may be having an exaggerated
stress response because the food they were bringing her by
for instance a food sensitivity
I'll there's a difference between a food sensitivity
and a food allergy most people think I have food allergies when I think I've
sensitivities the food so food allergy is that the classic
you're allergic to pena's you have peanuts in your throat closes or
you get hives all over your body that's an allergy to hypersensitivity to that
certain day
on there's a big difference between
an allergy and a food intolerance or food sensitivity
a food sensitivity could be that you eat a certain food
and you're exhausted afterwards or UE
a certain food and you start to get a headache about a half hour later
or he is certain food and you're in the bathroom 10 minutes later because you
have the runs
on those are actually intolerance is that to the food is your body
giving you a sign that is rejecting it unfortunately
there is a good brain connection when we'd have issues in our stomach
we have since chipita nurse Tomic we also could cause
issues with our nervous system neurology so
understanding our food sensitivities is extremely important now
and there's Acer in I'm
hormone called serotonin nets are happy or
that when we have high hi amounts of serotonin
were happier where we have lower up
lower amounts of serotonin we start be more on that
the defensive did I'm sorry to oppressive side of the
up a special on and guess where ninety percent up your serotonin is made
in your stomach or in your got as we call it
so if we're having got issues and
I can't tell you how many people got issues they don't realize it but
when you start to have got issues now you're messing with the serotonin levels
and now you can actually get depressive stage region get changes in our
what because a sensitivities and got issues
so office a very important to know n not many
people out there are thinking that
what they're putting in their body could actually affect the way they think and
it is a hundred percent
true that it does
so
what do food intolerances due to an hour but
food intolerances will end up causing
got information now got information
is going to cause
um I decrease in net serotonin production
so now you don't have that serotonin production
which is increasing your risk for depression um
also what got information is going to do is
we have this gut lining that um blocks
food and and antigens in foreign thing is going from your stomach to the
blustery
I'm but when you have a lot information in your stomach
it could cause those barriers to start to loosen up or start to break down
and now that allows things that are supposed to go through the stomach into
bushing
into the blushing because it's not protecting its like
it's like keeping your door um open for
I'm bad guys to come in so what that could cause
besides the depression is a good cause autoimmune disorders

or a want another one we can talk about like must ms
that's a nervous system one I like 'cause believe it or not
a diabetic symptoms a good cause of rheumatoid arthritis
arm that's usually do it too a stomach that
isn't functioning very well so there is definitely a connection between
your gut function and the way we think and that we are nervous system functions
so I it's not just brain
there is a connection with other areas of the body as well
so what are some tips we can get you now
for increasing your emotional wellness
or optimizing your emotional health so this is a huge one
arm some people may
have heard this before some people may think this is the craziest thing I've
ever heard
but we have to be aware of what is reality
verses what is the story that recreating about reality
so what the heck does that mean
their reality let's give us let's give a certain situation
so um mmm let's say
that you are
in an argument with a loved one so
let's say the argument Isabel
cleaning up the dishes you know that the hut
the wife is mad at the husband because you can clean the dishes um
so the reality of the situation is
that the husband did not clean the dishes and they're arguing
over the fact that in clean the dishes but
the wife could have his background story that's going on
that saying my husband doesn't care about me
he doesn't think that you know um he doesn't love me because not cleaning
think so we can have as big as whole story behind them behind their thoughts
a net
you know the no ish nobody cares about me and all this stuff so
you gotta be understudy realizing what
with the reality of the situation versus what are you ending on top of that
to make it even more stressful and this is huge
because this could totally calm down
your stress in a certain situation you know and we all have this in her
Childers call it inside a bus that says either we're not good enough
or we're not smart enough or you know there's always is little child that is
like
wasn't good enough out there that is running a lot of our thoughts
I know this may sound a little crazy but it's true
you know if you think about a certain situation at always stresses you out
think about why is it stressing out break it down
and I guarantee you get down to an underlying layer I love
you are good enough for somebody or you didn't you know that person
did show you enough lover some like that so being aware of your reality
verses what your story is or what is background
noises can't hold early change your emotional
state and I'm I hope that makes sense to you and if it doesn't leave their legal
questions
or comments about that because that is so big
to grass because it could really get your your thoughts in your motional
of stress is in order because you can really start to differentiate like
okay so is is really something I should be stressing out or is it really
something
that I am exaggerating that shows about distressingly more
so get aware
be aware I'm sorry up your reality versus what you are making
out that making about that reality oMG then obviously
we always say it but you wanna thing positive you wanna be optimistic
look at at look at every opportunity that you have
s as a way to Kroger a way to get something analyst
even if it's a bad situation or negative you know normally would be a negative
situation look at it and see what what can I learn from this
what can I get outta this in order to make it positive because
not everything negative has to be negative you know every stress in our
life
every situation that we get into arm you can learn from that and grow from it and
become stronger from it
so it's very important now
arm and then recognize your emotions
you know if you know that certain people for certain situations
make you a little bit more stress there a little bit more emotional
be aware bear so that when you are around that person
winner in that situation there you can recognize
that you're gonna start to get a little bit more stress and you can try to
organize your thoughts
and think about wire used by you reacting this way
you know maybe it's something that is between you and another person
you never resolved and if you never resolve that
you're always to have a negative home
%uh how you react to that person
so it's you know look at the people in your life and is there people in your
life
or situation in your life that you needed you need to hash out
weather is something maybe a fight Jarrett somebody never got over
order you know having a situation where
you know you you you're not expressing yourself the way that you would want to
in front of a ser individual on the huge things that
that would really take it stress of your emotional state
off and then express yourself appropriately
you know you wanna make sure that when you are an emotional
emotional state that that release
that emotion is appropriate and you're not like blowing the lid
going crazy like maybe just sit there for a moment
think about that situation is stressing you and figure out a way to get out at
in a way that it's going to be positive so you know is there something that you
need to talk to you
is there somebody that is there something that needs to be hashed out
like I said I'll but expression express it appropriately
you know to start screaming young because the minis are attacking
something or someone its gonna come right back at you
so there is an appropriate way to approach a certain situation
you want to do in that matter rather than just
causing a fight
up and then you know that we all talk about this mary says it a listen your
gut
your gut really is telling you things
when you feel that little thing in the stomach only listen to it
you know if you're around a certain situation they are getting his gut
feeling is in a hundred of is a good situation
listen to it and reevaluate what you're about to do
and make sure that it's a it's a decision or something that state you're
gonna be
happy with or that is not gonna stress your yourself more
by going into that situation
and then communication is enormous
you know communicating with your loved ones communicating with your friends
communicating with your coworkers
arm if you have it anything inside you that stressing you
about that person or situation you need to communicate that with that
and not in a way that's gonna destroyer
earned bridges you want to communicate with them in a way that's going to you
%uh mend any issues and that some very hard for some people
but once you start to do it more often
and you start to talk to people about things that are bothering you
yes artists unite just this week coming off your shoulders
and you're gonna feel like a different person simply because you let your
emotions
um and then leslie is
becoming aware I love and removing
food sensitivities because food sensitivities
are so huge and cause such an array
or in a riot of problems for people that
they don't realize it and now they're perpetuating the problem
by keeping happy that keep eating that says that food that you're sensitive to
so I'm
there are ways to find out about those food sensitivities there certain test
out there
um there sir in a blood test
end or other test you can do are I like to say the best way to do it we don't
spend all this money on
other testing is remove foods that you think you may be sensitive to
force a a month see how you feel wire of a bit
then head that food back a near life
and if you feel like garbage afterwards if you're getting headaches if you're
always in the bathroom if you
if you're starting to get depressed arm
then remove it you know that you know that that something your body is
reacting to remove it
that's the easy and cheap way of doing it you know the more expensive way the
more comprehensive way is to get tested
some people may or may not want to do that so it's important to know
on wanted those entities and
and how to remove it and and and when they remove it so I'm
some amazing great tips for you
on how to stay emotionally healthy um
I think there is the lead I'll

so I'm don't stress the small stuff I a sound so basic
but it
I like to say pick your battles if you're gonna have a
stressful situation you're gonna have a anarchy manner
by later anything with anybody pick your battles like make sure that the battle
is going to be worth it
it's not like this little tiny thing that you're blowing out of proportion
Amanda and I know that sounds you know hard to do it looks easy
what its it just comes with practice in and being in tune with yourself
you know I N you we all understand our
our emotional states more than anybody else and you know what's gonna send you
off and you know it's not gonna set you off
so being into like that hashing out
