Hi everybody and welcome to CloudMom. Many parents ask, what they can put in their newborn's
crib? The answer quite simply is very little. When I was pregnant with my first child, I
remember thinking about all the different kinds of warm and snuggly things that I could
put in my baby's crib to make look all cozy and warm. But in fact, this is a big no no.
Parents are well advised not to put anything in their newborns crib. Bye bye blankets,
bye bye soft books, bye bye all sorts of warm, cushy and friendly looking soft animals and
the reason is very, very simple, something that is called Sids -- sudden infant death
syndrome. The American Academy of Pediatrics, which is a group that we all have to pay very
close attention to has advised that no sort of soft bedding, stuffed animals, or other
things be placed in the baby's crib because it can affect the baby's breathing. You want
to make sure that at all points that your baby's breathing is clear and unobstructed.
So unfortunately, what you're going to find is that you're not going to have a crib with
all these sort of friendly animals reading to your baby when you put him down at night.
Another thing to think about is something called bumpers. Bumpers are kind of funny
thing; you can buy them as part of your bedding setting. You might get very attached to the
look of your crib and it might become an integral part of your nursery décor to have a pretty
bumper on the outside of your crib and it might even match your bed skirt. But people
all over the country are starting to question the safety of bumpers because once your baby
can move and roll around, you don't want your baby's mouth or nose or breathing to be any
way obstructed by the bumper. So that's it for me, no more bumpers in my house. Now you
might worry that your baby's going to get cold at night and you might think that you
want to put a blanket on your baby to keep him nice and warm during the night, but the
fact is you just have to find another solution for this. You can put a t-shirt under your
baby's pajamas and you can also safety and tightly swaddle your baby. This should be
enough to keep your baby warm. So your baby might look a little lonely in his crib and
you might think that your crib looks a little stark and bare, but this is not the most important
thing. As we all know that the most important thing is that your baby is safe.
