Hello everybody
My name is Rodrigo and this is Clara
We and other students from UFMG are on a mission.
Participate in iGEM.
The IGEM is an international synthetic biology competition
organized every year by MIT
one of the largest and most important universities in the world.
The competition is extremely interesting as it challenges undergraduate and postgraduate students
to develop innovative projects in order to solve existing problems in the world.
Last year, UFMG participated for the first time in that competition.
The team intended to develop a genetically modified bacteria
able to detect early risk of a patient developing heart disease.
This year we are trying to contribute to another very complicated disease
that kills thousands of people around the world.
The Colon Cancer
The Colorectal cancer is characterized by tumors that affect the colon and ***
of the large intestine, being one of the most frequent cancers in the world.
Annually in Brazil, colon cancer is diagnosed in approximately 14,000 patients.
The tumor may be treated and cured in the majority of cases,
when detected early.
However, the detection of this disease in the early stage is complicated
due to the invasive diagnosis available today, such as colonoscopy
which is an exam that inserts a camera into the large intestine to seek any anomaly.
In this way, we intend to produce an unicellular fungi,
called yeasts,
as those encountered in the production of beer, cachaça and ferment
making them capable of diagnosing and treating colon cancer through ingestion.
In the large intestine, the yeast will detect products released by the cancerous cells
and will emit colors that can be observed in the feces, thus diagnosing the disease.
Awesome, no?
It's really interesting, but all this research costs too much money and requires a lot of time.
As our team does not have sponsorship, we need your help.
You will gain all our gratitude and also a super special surprise.
Any amount is welcome to help us .
