hi I'm Peg from sony and I'm here to show you how to protect your computer from malware and spyware
that may come in the form of a browser helper object
or BHO when using Internet Explorer
so you're probably asking yourself what is a BHO
a browser helper object or BHO is an Internet Explorer browser add-on tool
microsoft created BHO's to make the browsing experience more personalized
but due to the design of companies that create BHO's some have the
potential to open you up to security vulnerabilities
most BHO's are in the form of a toolbar however toolbars in general are
not all bad
for example
Google and Yahoo
are two examples of toolbars that are relatively safe
as a rule of thumb when downloading or installing any software must carefully read the options
or choose custom installation
make sure to uncheck or deselect any option that installs a toolbar
although many of these toolbars are safe it is better to err on the side of caution
even if you are not using Internet Explorer you should refrain from
installing toolbars because the BHO will attach to the Internet Explorer and
infect your computer even though you are using a different browser
lastly if your computer is running slow
pages are not loading or your web pages are being redirected somewhere
this may indicate a spyware infection
for my demonstration I'm using the Vpceb
each Vaio model is slightly different and the operating system and browser version you
are using could be a factor
so be sure to check the owner's manual
or visit us at esupport.Sony.com for specific instructions on your
model operating system and browser
to view BHO's installed on your computer
open Internet Explorer
click Tools
and then click Manage add-ons
click Toolbars and extensions
these are the BHO's that are currently installed on your system
if you do not recognize the publisher right-click on the BHO and select disable
in addition we suggest uninstalling any toolbars just to be safe
unless it comes from a reputable source like Yahoo Microsoft Adobe etc.
to remove any toolbars
click the Start button
click Control Panel
and then click Programs & features
scan the installed programs list for any toolbars
and uninstall them by clicking to highlight the program
and then click Uninstall
once you are complete close the Control Panel
if the symptoms still persist you can find more information on the
Sony esupport website at
www.esupport.Sony.com
Sony recommends that you purchase and install a good third-party virus scanner
that offers spyware and adware protection
make sure you set it up to scan your downloads
run scans regularly and pay attention to the installation wizard options when
installing or downloading any software
