The Goldwater scholarship is a national scholarship for sophomores and juniors, but it's mathematics
and science and engineering; only in those fields. So, since I'm Polymer Science I'm
obviously in one of those fields. So, I joined Dr. McCormick's lab in my freshman year. Since
then I've been able to co-author two papers with graduate students, and so that was totally
essential to me winning the scholarship. That was a vital part of my application being able
to say that I did work on these two projects and they got published in good scientific
papers.
I particularly enjoyed the Organic II class that I had with Dr. Hans Schanz. A lot of
my classmates didn't enjoy it as much, but I just feel like I really understood it. I
really enjoyed learning about, just, organic chemistry and how you can take molecules and
go through these different reactions and put them together. I just feel like that's like
one of the coolest things on earth. That's why I'm a Polymer Science major.
I love Hattiesburg, I grew up here. I've lived in other bigger cities and nothings ever been
to me like Hattiesburg has been. I feel like, a lot of my friends say it's a college town
but it's not a college town like Starkville or Oxford is totally college, like centered
around the college; whereas Hattiesburg kind of operates on its own but still has a college
in the town. It's like a different dimension there. I really couldn't say enough good things
about Hattiesburg. I don't even know why, I just got this like deep love for this city
man. I don't want to live here anymore but me and Hattiesburg - We're tight.
