Well ever since..
the horrific gang ***
took place in Delhi,
I’ve almost become
used to waking up
to a new
bizarre downright
sexist and stupid comment
by some, leading
light on the other..
Yesterday it was
spiritual guru Asaram Bapu..
today it was
Samajwadi party leader
Abu Azmi..
who said that
fashion and nudity
was responsible
for ***..
Its actually almost
like a race for
who makes the most
stunning comment..
Let me ask Shaina N C..
that Shaina..as a..
as a woman..and..as..
as a young woman
and as a young politician..
doesnt it make you squirm..
When he talks about
urban viz-a-viz rural..
there are so many
statistics where
sociologists and researchers
have kind of shown
like for example,
in the adivasi community,
for your knowledge,
in last 25 years,
there have been
just two rapes..
now this is a
sociological debate
which can go on
for hours and hours..
you may agree..
you may disagree..
I think the beauty
of a democracy is freedom
to expression..
However..In *** cases,
when one discusses
this kind of mindset..
whether it is the
mindset of police..
whether it is the
mindset of the political class
or for that matter
even of Godmen..
to suggest that
a woman can stop ***..
I think is totally absurd..
Because you know
what happens with these..
Rahul Easwar..
One of the problems
is that with the
absurdity these..
of these statements
also you have..
you know..the focus
completely shifts from
what we should
actually be talking about..
And don’t you agree
that some of the reactions
have been..
you know..
completely knee jerk..
You have the
Pondicherry government
which is right now
considering making it
mandatory for school girls
to wear overcoats
even in the summer..
because that they think
will prevent ***..
Isn’t that going
a bit too far..
Nidhiji..two things..
Let us be..
intelectually honest..
There is a view..
there is..
there are two major
world views and paradigms
regarding sexuality,
females,
atrocities of females..
One can be broadly
called a left liberal view..
and one..
a right conservative view..
They differ..
They have a lot of
inherent defferences..
But if you are going to
piggy back on
such occasions and going to simply
fire at the right conservative
which is going to be
the majority..
we are never going
to find a common ground..
Let us talk to them..
Let us engage with them..
let us understand
their inhibitions..
These senior people..
I would say India
is a very young nation..
but we are having
a lot of senior people,
elderly people..
who have there
own experience..
let us engage with them..
Their world view is
different..They have
lot of inhibitions regarding
an over sexed society..
a changing society
after globalised world..
So loet us understand
their apprehensions
Am sorry..did you
just say that we are
an over sexed society?
Rahul Easwar?
Do you really believe that?
You think that
is the problem?
You think we are
over sexed?
No.
That is one of the many reasons..
If there..
If we need a half naked
woman even to sell
a spoon..
we can for sure know
that we are living
in a over sexed society..
So thats on one side
and there is
*** starvation on
the other side..
so its a complex problem
and let me remind you
one thing very clearly..
India is a nation
of 121 crores..
America is a nation
of hardly 30 crores..
more rapes and
*** atrocities happen in
America..as per statistics..
So let us understand
things in a deeper
perspective..let the right wing and
left wing engage with each other.. I would advise you strongly
not to go by statistics
in a country that does
not even report ***..
probably more than
half the time..
I don’t think statistics
are an indicator of
anything..
Am going to take
that back to
Pooja Bedi..
Even if I accept it..
even if i accept
your argument..
even if accept
your argument...
It is only half..
India has a population
of 121 crores..
America has even
1/4th of India’s population..
So India is better.. oh..so are you saying..
Are you saying
that what something
like Mr. Mohan Bhagvad
and what
Asaram Bapu says..
we should actually
reflect on it?
Is this..
you know..
aren’t these statements..
shouldnt they just be
condemned straight away..
and..and..you know
for what they are..
or you think
we should be actually
sitting and mulling
over them because of
there experience as you said..
No let us understand
the huge majority
of people from
every religion..
Let it be Hindu,
Muslim or Christian..
or beyond
BJP Congress or any
political party share
these views..
We should understand
they might have formed
these opinions..
in fifties..in sixties..
or in forties or seventies..
but the world has
changed in the past
ten to twenty years..
that they have changed
in the past say
hundred years..
so let us understand..
Let us..
The youngster India..
The young India
take initiative to talk to
our parents generation..
talk to our
seniors generation..
Let us not go for confrontation..
Let us try to convey
and convince..
Let our debates
generate light.not heat..
Ok one sec..
Suhel I’ll just come to you..
Lets take this
back to Pooja first
who was listening to this
rather intensely..
Pooja what do you think
about what Rahul Easwaran
has to say about
a dialogue between
the new generation
and those who may
have a certain set of
ideas because they are older..
You know Nidhi..
All I want to say is that
this is the 21st century..
And for all those men
out there..
that expects the
Indian woman to be
traditionally subservient..
for the woman to be one
of those grovelling
women who are relegated
to kitchens..
Forget it!
Deal with it..
Life has moved on..
The 21st century woman
today..
She wants to go
out there in the work place..
She will work,
She will earn..
She will be successful..
she will establish herself
as an individual..
and you know what..
they just have to deal with it..
If she wants to wear
a pair of jeans or
even a miniskirt,
she is entitled to do so..
If 65% of India
is below 35,
and if there is this kind of
disengagement then
Rahul Easwaran correctly
spoke about that
you know they are
senior people..
I want to remind
Rahul of a
George Bernard Shaw quote.
”Wisdom doesn’t necessarily come with age”
But thats for another debate..
Lets come back to
this issue..
If the political class,
which is the
senior political class,
talks and behaves in a
despicable, derogatory,
desultory manner,
in which they do..
it says three things..
number one..
they are disengaged
from the idea of
today’s India..
number two..
They are so stuck
in their little cocoons
that they don’t have
flexibility for
contrarian behaviour..
or what they believe is
contrarian living..
and number three..
these people will be
remembered not for their
rightful utterances
but for making idiots of
themselves..
or for making fools
of themselves..
which is not the position
any politician wants
to be in..
I mean..
tommorow..
Abhijeeth Mukherji will
be remembered more for
‘dented and painted’
Unfortunately that is
probably all he will be
remembered for..
If my sister is wearing
a mini skirt,
she wants to go
to discos..
my grandma.
my grandmother is having
a lot of inhibitions
and apprehensions..
What would I..
What should I tell
my grandmother..
that you don’t belong to us?
you don’t belong to India?
Let us talk to each other..
There is a generation issue..
There is a
cultural evolution issue..
there is a point of
changing values..
let us..er..
Let us engage with
these people..
Many of them are
saying out of concern..
out of botheration..
out of what they believe
is right..
so let us talk it out..
Suhelji’s outrage
is understandable..
Poojaji’s outrage
is understandable..
Let us bridge..
Let us bridge..
Let us talk to each other..
Let us communicate..
Let us not be enemies...
