Voiceover: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
the home of the famed Bowman Gray Stadium.
(car race)
And tonight is event number five of the 2013 K&N Pro Series East.
(music)
Dylan: Friday was my 18th birthday,
it was definitely uneventful to say the least.
I mean I was travelling for five hours on the plane.
I don't know why, just started think about a lot of things.
Just like I'm alone, I'm going to graduate high school soon,
and I'm an adult, I got to take the responsibilities of my family to my own.
Because my Dad's not there.
My Dad was the one who truly had the passion for racing before I did.
He always loved it, he wanted to have a go-kart when he was a kid
but he wasn't fortunate enough.
I mean he was in the ghetto like of South Chicago when he was a kid.
When he finally had enough money, and he was successful enough to give me one
he took me out to the go-kart track.
I was driving around there and I completely went the wrong way
but I just loved it.
I guess he [kind of] lived through after me I guess in some way
because he loved raising
and then he was able to experience that through me pursuing it through a career.
Female: [inaudible] the Hard Rock Hotel's Casino President Andrew Kwasniewski.
Male: Kwasniewski [with by read], he was found dead in his home this morning
but what appears to be a self inflicted gun shot wound.
Dylan: When I had to hear on the news that my Dad committed suicide,
it sucks because everyone looks at you kind of differently
and maybe they have their own opinion about you.
Even though they don't know anything about the circumstances.
Voiceover: [Unintelligible] was currently discovered by his wife.
Jen: He's over seen a multi-million dollar expansion
so he was under pressure at work and having trouble sleeping.
So he started taking sleeping medication
that sort of altered his brain chemistry I guess.
It's our belief that he was sound asleep when he took his own life.
Dylan: People didn't know my Dad, he was a family man.
He absolutely loved us, there was nothing going on
and it sucks because people think that he would have done that himself
but I know that my Dad was so strong.
He grew up from being at a house like as big as my room
to becoming a president of a hotel, and he wouldn't give up on anything.
Jen: When something like that happens you have to decide
you're either going to live your life or you're going to die too.
Somewhere you just dig down deep and reach down and I knew my kids needed me.
You're going to get 18 on there?
If I wasn't strong for them, then they didn't have anybody else.
(sung) Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Dylan, happy birthday to you.
Jen: Yehey!
Dylan: Racing's definitely a way to stay connected with my Dad.
In my car there's a cross and has my Dad's initials RAK
and I don't want him to ever be forgotten.
He was the one who started this legacy
so I want to make sure that when I do win those races
and I do win those championships like he's going to be right on my side,
right next to me when I'm doing it.
(music)
Voiceover: All right man, let's check those belts, relax those fingers.
150 laps, Bowman Gray.
Dylan: It's time to focus and get down to racing.
Voiceover: Bowman Gray Stadium, this is the mad house
and for good reason, no one is immuned from getting hit or hitting someone.
Voiceover: Oh trouble!
Dylan: It's like a battlefield, you got to avoid the explosions in front of you.
You don't want to hit the land mines.
(cars racing)
Mardy: It couldn't work out any better.
We didn't have any marks on the car.
We were all clean and it was coming down to the end of the race.
As I looked up -
Voiceover: Look at Dylan Kwasniewski!
(music)
A little bit of contact.
(music)
What a disaster for Dylan Kwasniewski.
And the kid from Los Vegas is in big trouble.
Dylan: I was sitting there like I think I just threw away the race.
Voiceover: Come on buddy, we have to get that thing going.
(music)
Mardy: We've just lost a whole bunch of points at that point.
That took us from third to 15th, we made it to the top three finish.
Dylan: I get so pissed off at myself that I just did that.
That "Oh my god, I have to get to the front no matter what."
I like become a mad man.
Voiceover: You can still win this buddy.
Just keep your mind focused.
(music)
Jen: Watching Dylan race from the back is my favorite
because he trust his own zen and figures out how to make it to the front.
Voiceover: Here's side by side as Kwasniewski goes to the inside
and he'll take that spot.
Voiceover: The 98 is really charging back through the field here.
Dylan: Like was tracking it through the inside grass
and pass a bunch of people there too.
Voiceover: Great job by Kwasniewski trying to make something happen there.
Dylan: I just push into the limit.
Voiceover: How about Dylan Kwasniewski here has already made his way back up
after that spin earlier.
Passes [Kinsey Rusty].
Great restart by Dylan Kwasniewski.
Now look at the contact between Kwasniewski and Godovic!
Voiceover: Dylan Kwasniewski is up to second.
And they're still rubbing, they're rubbing right now
but to the bottom goes Kennedy.
Here comes Kwasniewski but he's going to run out of time, Ben Kennedy will win!
Kwasniewski finishing second.
Voiceover: Hey buddy have the hell of a job right there man.
Jen: All right.
Voiceover: Come back buddy, way to come back.
Mardy: For him to be able to do that just shows how much talent his got
and I'm sure the other racers find out or struck really pay attention.
Jen: I'm so proud of you, oh god that was so good.
You did a hell of a job, that was awesome.
It would have been great to win as an 18th birthday present
but second wasn't bad.
Never giving up is just something that I think he learned from his Dad.
I'm sure that Randy was up there giving him the strength to fight back.
Dylan: Yeah he definitely pushes me to go out and try my hardest
at everything I do.
He was the one who set up my career
and hopefully I can take it to the Sprint Cup Series,
and become a Sprint Cup champion.
Show him that his hard work paid off.
(music)
Voiceover: Next Flat Out.
Dylan: Dude, I don't even know if I can do that
at the end of the summer anymore.
Male: What do you mean?
Dylan: I don't know if I'm going to have time.
Male: You're not going to make the year up trip,
it didn't seem like too much time to me man.
