The cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Poznań is the oldest Polish cathedral, dating from the 10th century.
Did you know ?
Did you know that the first French cathedral was built in Lyon. That's why, the bishop in Lyon is called "primat des Gaules"
It stands on the island in the middle of Warta river in Poznan
On this island the castle of Mieszko I, first Polish king was built, in 10th century.
Nowadays, in its place we can see the *** Mary Church.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style, that we can see today.
But from those days several changes have taken place. For example, this front elevation, was destroyed during WW2 and rebuilt in a neo-gothic style.
Actually, the elevation had been in a classical style since XVIII century.
Now, let's go inside. I am going to show you some details.
The first thing to do, of course, is to go and see Jesus !
In the choir, we can admire a polyptych from XV century with in its center statues of the *** Mary, St Barbara and St Catherine.
Behind the choir, there is a chapel called the golden chapel built in 1830/1840
at the place of an old chapel dedicated to the *** Mary, which was destroyed by a fire.
This chapel is dedicated to the first kings of Poland, like Mieszko I.
A last thing to be seen in this cathedral is a relic from St Peter and mentioned in the Bible.
have you found it ? It's St Peter's sword. St Peter used it in the Mont of Olives. When Judas betrayed Jesus, Peter was very angry !
He cut out the disciple's ear of the high priest, but Jesus Christ healed him.
The sword looks like that
I didn't imagine it like this either.
If you go to visit this cathedral with your lover, don't forget to go behind the cathedral to see the lover bridge !
