Greetings to you all!You have heard me say this before: The staff at Cal Poly Pomona is, without a
doubt, the best I have ever worked with in my 42 years in higher education. I
mean it. There are so many great examples of staff members going above and beyond the call of duty
to support our students and the university. They have gone nearly five years without a raise, but
they never stop taking pride in the campus and our academic mission.
Every year, Staff Council undergoes a juried selection process that identifies
four outstanding staff members. It is my privilege to introduce to you our 2012 recipients:
Jesse Quiroz, Landscape Services, Facilities Planning & Management
Jorge Bonilla, Information & Technology Services, Division of Student Affairs
Sonia Campos, Intercollegiate Athletics
Kevin Malone, College of Education & Integrative Studies
On Thursday, June 14, we will celebrate this accomplishment at the Staff
Appreciation luncheon. Please join me in congratulating Jesse, Jorge, Sonia and Kevin.
This year ARCHES celebrated its 15th anniversary at Cal Poly Pomona. ARCHES
stands for Achievement, Retention, and Commitment to Higher Education Success. It has a
marvelous track record in keeping students on track to graduation, with a 93 percent
retention rate over the last year. Last week they celebrated the graduation and accomplishments of
28 seniors with friends, family, students, staff and the university community.
By now you know that Mr. Cal Poly Pomona is about to become Dr. Cal Poly Pomona.
The one and only Ron Simons will be rightfully recognized for his nearly 50 years of
service to this university. He will receive his hood at the College of Agriculture commencement
ceremony on Sunday night, June 10th.I know that everyone won't be able to see Ron on Sunday night,
but all university faculty and staff are invited to join Betty and me at the Manor House for a
special reception on Thursday,June 7, beginning at 4 p.m. Ron and his wife Judy will be moving out
of the area later this summer, so if you want some face time with a true university icon, please
make your reservation. Just e-mail the address below to RSVP. We hope to see you then.

You have certainly heard that Chancellor Reed announced his retirement. Over the
coming months, the Board of Trustees will guide a process towards new leadership for
the largest higher education system in the United States. This transition will begin a new
era for the CSU.On a personal note, I have a lot of mixed emotions. Charlie, and his wife Cathy,
have worked tirelessly over the past 14 years in support of our educational mission. I
cannot imagine a couple more deserving of the freedoms associated with retirement. They have
earned that right tenfold. But I am also saddened. Throughout my career, I have never met anyone
who cares more about students than Charlie Reed. Most of you only know the chancellor
based on what you have read in the newspapers or heard from your colleagues. And that's never
the whole story. There is no question in my mind that the CSU is a great university
system, thanks to Chancellor Reed. If you are watching this Charlie, please accept my humble
thanks and appreciation.Next week will mark my final regularly scheduled video address of the
academic year, so I'm bound to have a lot to share. See you soon!
