Other areas that we commonly see in our office when we are dealing with the lower extremities,
we are talking about the knee, we are also talking about problems within the ankle. Now
when we are talking about athletics this encompasses almost every sport that's out there. I don't
care if it's golfing, bowling, to swimming, to running, to football, basketball and baseball.
We all have to use our lower extremities for these particular sports. Now the knees and
the ankles are kind of set up for a little bit of an excessive wear and tear. If we are
not supported correctly in our shoe system, then we are setting our ankles up for some
excessive wear and tear which can be transited up into the knee, which then in fact can go
up into the hip and then into the low back. Some ways that we can help assess what's going
on with the lower extremities are that we want to make sure that the foot is properly
supported. We want to make sure there is a good support system within whatever shoe that
the athlete is wearing. In addition to that, we want to make sure again that we are toned
with the muscles that oppose each other. For instance the quadriceps of the thigh and the
hamstrings, in the back of the thigh. We want to make sure that they are equally toned so
it takes some of the wear and tear and the excessive stress off of the knee itself.
