(female speaker 1). In a health watch follow-up,
we last told you what does not work about dieting,
tonight we focus on the positive things that do work
to promote good health.
(female speaker 2). As Newswatch's Jessice Caudle
reports that when it comes to choosing meals,
size really does matter.
(Jessica Caudle). In a world of big bag chips
and 32 ounce soft drinks, people are still striving
for the perfect body.
Eastern Illinois University Family and Consumer Sciences
Department Chair, Jim Painter, says dieters don't have to quit
eating foods they like to lose weight.
(Jim Painter). The number one thing they can do
to lose weight is to keep track of how much they eat.
It could be as simple as having a pad and writing down
what you eat everyday or watching how much you eat
by portioning what you're being served.
(Jessica Caudle). Dr. Painter says that a portion
like this child's cup is the suggested serving size,
however reality today has choices like these,
which are three to five times larger, more common.
(Carrie O'Donnell). People can eat healthy all they
want, but if they're not getting active and getting their heart
rate up there, then they're not going to lose the weight.
And I think that most of the success that we see
in weight loss programs is exercising.
(Caudle). O'Donnell says you can spread
the exercises throughout the day.
(O'Donnell). It's not how hard, how long,
I think it's just getting that 20 minutes a day in every day.
(Caudle). Another option for people with
little time is being offered by some
local fast food restaurants.
Local Arby's area supervisor, Brandon Beever, says they're
offering low carbohydrate meals to their customers.
(Brandon Beever). All the industries have
kind of gone to leaning towards the specific diets
that are out there right now.
We just want to keep the customers satisfied
with what they want to order.
(Caudle). Painter and O'Donnell say that
one thing to keep in mind is that it's up to you to make
your weight loss program work.
(O'Donnell). If they just get that mindset
of changing their whole entire eating behavior and working
with that, then it's not so challenging for them to keep.
(Painter). Exercising, eating, going on
this plan with a friend is helpful, and having someone
that you're accountable to, to make sure you're doing what
you say that you'll do.
Accountability and support are both important.

use portion control and proper exercise,
any food will fit into a healthy diet.
