Hey there, it's Andrew, and welcome back to the Capstone Experience.
Today I'd like to show you a little bit about the Sanford Media Center.
It's a unique multimedia lab right here in Gorgas library.
Let's go check it out.
This is the Sanford Media Center
more commonly known as the SMC. It's a place where you can come,
any major, and work on multimedia projects the such as photo editing
video editing, audio recording, you can even rent cameras,
lighting equipment, green screens, anything to make your project happen. Compile all your materials
and come here when you're finished and you have people are gonna teach you how to use
the software
and ensure that your project is the most professional that it can be. Let's go
check out what some students are working on now.
- Hey, how's it going? - Hey!
- I'm Andrew. - Collins. Nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you, Collins, as well.
Tell me a little about what you're working on.
- I am making the season brochure for the theater and dance department.
- Okay, wow, so you can be in a multimedia lab here at Gorgas
and you don't have to be in TCF, communications... - Absolutely.
I knew a little bit about Photoshop and InDesign before I started working
but not a whole lot. It was really me coming in here and
kind of clicking around and talking to
the staff here. They've help me do layer masks, and all this fun stuff that I didn't know anything about.
- How's it going? - Hey, what's up? - I'm Andrew. - Ryan, nice to meet you.
- Why don't you tell us a little about what's going on here?
- So I just started this song. I actually do a lot of Internet stuff.
like nerdy hip hop, anime, videos games, stuff like that. - That's cool
- So I'm just making the track, just laying down the hook
right now. This is Logic which is a level below Pro Tools, which is industry grade.
- You're pretty much with the real stuff as good as he gets it right here. - Yeah, and this is
very good foam,
this is a Blueberry mike, a preamp. You can get a pretty good stuff done here.
- So you have a lot of top-of-the-line stuff from the music
industry that's available for anyone on campus to use
you know, if they say they're interested. - Yeah
- Pretty much everything I've learned about editing I've learned here in the media lab
from asking for help from the staff members and
they're always there and the know the answer to almost everything. - So they know what
your question is before you can ask it sometimes.
- Yeah, almost (laugh). Sometimes they will anticipate your questions
They will walk around the room and see you struggling with something and say
"Hey, do you need help with this?" - Okay
"Hey, do you need help with this?" - Okay
- What are the hours here? - They're always open, it seems like. They open at 8 in the morning and they're open until
midnight most nights. - So, really, for anybody to use, any time of day. - Yes!
- My stuff has been published by a lot of video game media outlets
and I've had video game sound designers compliment my sound design
that I developed in here. You can do whatever you want here.
- So there you have it. The SMC is a student-centered multimedia lab, just for you.
I think I've been inspired to work in a few projects. I'll catch you guys next time
on the Capstone Experience.
