Hi, I'm Greg Hansen and I've been a Record Producer for 35 years, and we're talking about
how to become a Music Producer. There's another path for becoming a Music Producer, and that
involves, again, working your way up through the industry. A lot of Engineers end up becoming
Music Producers because Engineering is such a big part of the industry and how records
are made. And having a good musical knowledge is one of the things that engineers occasionally
have difficulty with. You need to have a good not only technical background, but creative
background to be a Music Producer so you can tell a singer how to change something they're
doing, for example, or tell a studio guitar player what licks you want to have, and that
involves a little bit more than engineering. But you need both those areas under cover
to be able to be a confident Record Producer. Then you also have to have great people skills
and working with very finicky artists and often insecure clients. So by having good
skills in all those areas, in technical, creative and people skills, you can generally go as
far as you want to go, or as far as your talent will take you.
