If I don't get hearing aids will my hearing loss get worse?
I like to answer this question by thinking of someone with a broken leg. After having
your leg in a cast for many weeks and not using the muscles, they will become weak and
not work as well. The same “use it or lose it” principle can apply to our hearing.
If your ears and your hearing nerve are not stimulated for many years due to hearing loss,
you may develop more difficulty understanding sounds. So, while your hearing loss may look
the same on paper, your ability to understand conversation can decline without the use of
hearing aids. Keep in mind that while we can’t predict whether your hearing will get worse,
we know it won’t get better! That’s why it’s important to be fitted with hearing
aids as soon as a professional determines they are necessary.
